James 'Tubby' Maxwell, baseball scout
James Maxwell was fond of two things - baseball and people. Fortunately, he got to spend his entire life around both.
In his early 20s, Maxwell played professionally for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although his playing career was short-lived, he was invited to stay on with the organization as a scout.
"Baseball was his livelihood." said Lilly Maxwell, his wife. "He loved to talk with people, especially if they were talking baseball."
James "Tubby" Maxwell, 68, of Warsaw, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a member of Paint Lick Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Maxwell got the nickname "Tubby" from his brother, Wilson Maxwell of Warsaw, because he was "quite large as a child," Mrs. Maxwell said.
When the rigors of travel and failing health forced Maxwell to give up scouting, he decided to try a profession he dabbled in as a youth. Using a spare room in his house, he opened up his own barber shop.
The shop became a baseball shrine, decorated with pictures of players he met over his 20-year scouting career. Many of Maxwell's friends would meet in the shop and talk baseball for hours, even if they weren't getting a haircut.
"He started out thinking it would just be a part-time thing," said Mrs. Maxwell. "But in the end he got more business than he ever dreamed, but he didn't seem to mind. They would just sit and talk baseball for hours."
