Hehman cousins die just hours apart
For years, Paul Hehman had looked up to his older cousin, Robert F. Hehman, who had been his mentor since 1996.
Both men were quadriplegics.
Both men died Friday.
Robert F. Hehman, 59, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:05 a.m. at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a biology professor at the University of Cincinnati.
Paul Andrew Hehman, 33, of Fort Mitchell, died at 10:01 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Robert Hehman was a senior at Xavier University, heading for medical school in 1960 when he broke his neck diving into Rocky Fork Lake.
Paul Hehman was 19, about to complete his freshman year at Morehead State University in 1986, when a dorm-hall game turned tragic.
Paul and a bunch of his pals in the dorm were hosing down the floor with soapy water, taking turns diving onto a rubber raft and sliding as far as they could across the slippery surface. On one attempt, Paul slid too far and hit his head on a baseboard register. Although he didn't hit hard, the impact left him paralyzed from the neck down.
From that point on, Robert became an inspiration to Paul. Their relationship was so unusual, it was the subject of a Post story in 1996.
To Paul, Robert was an example of how you can make something of yourself even if the world thinks you no longer can. Robert Hehman owned a restaurant. He was a college professor. He was living proof to Paul that, if you have a goal and you're serious about it, you can overcome circumstances.
Paul's family said in a statement Sunday that Paul never thought of himself as handicapped.
"Characterized by an energetic and favorable attitude, Paul was always positive and had the ability to make people make the most of themselves," the family said.
Robert Hehman had been ill, but Paul had been in good health, said Paul's brother, Mark.
Paul had not yet learned of his cousin's death when a home health nurse made her usual visit shortly before 10 a.m. Friday. While she was there, Paul turned suddenly blue. He said, "I can hear you, but I can't see you," his brother said.
Those were Paul's last words.
"We believe that Bob came down and took him," Mark said. "We know they are both in a better place. They got up and walked and left their chairs behind."
