Sister Mary Edwin, teacher, health-care administrator
Sister Mary Edwin came to the United States from Germany on July 4, 1922, because she wanted to teach in American elementary schools.
And while she did teach, earning a lifetime teaching certificate, she's most remembered by the Sisters of Notre Dame for her years of work at area health care centers.
Sister Mary Edwin, S.N.D., 99, of Park Hills, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Heights, Park Hills.
"She was a person of very strong principle and a very prayerful person," said Sister Luann Bender, administrator of the St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright.
Sister Bender knew Sister Edwin for some 40 years and worked closly with her during the past 23 years at St. Charles.
"Even in her last illness, she would have her prayer book at times of evening prayer to pray with the community. Every day, as long as she could, she prayed for hours for our health care facilities.
"We'll be depending on her prayers in eternity."
Born Elizabeth S. Paetzold, she was an elementary school teacher with the Diocese of Covington and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and served as the first administrator of Lynch Hospital, St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright and was the first administrator of St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead.
Sister Mary Edwin served as a health consultant and medical librarian with the provincial house and at St. Charles Care center. For the last 15 years, she did pastoral visitation in St. Aloysius and Mother of God parishes, and the St. Charles Care Center.
Until last year, when she was 98, she volunteered to visit residents at St. Charles.
Survivors include a brother, Andreas Paetzold of Oldenburg, Germany; a niece and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Sisters of Notre Dame Provincial House, St. Joseph Heights, Park Hills. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the the convent, with a wake service at 5 p.m. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the convent cemetery. Jeanetta Beers, 82, of Erlanger, died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at her residence.
Arrangements are pending with Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Independence.
Edward G. Biedenharn, 95, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Baptist Village in Erlanger. He was a retired printing pressman with Methodist Publishing House, and an employee of World of Sports Racquet and Golf Club. He played semi- professional baseball with the Covington Gems, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Erlanger Senior Citizens, Legion of Mary and the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Biedenharn; sons, Edward "Ned" Biedenharn of Grove City, Ohio, and Bruce J. Biedenharn of Erlanger; a daughter, Alberta I. Courter of Xenia, Ohio; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Highway, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.
Eloise Byrd, 59, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Sherman Church of Christ, Dry Ridge. A son, David Alan Byrd, died in 1995.
Survivors include her husband, Vernon Byrd; sons, Gary Byrd of Cincinnati and Michael Byrd of Goshen, Ohio; a brother, Dennis Tolson of Lebanon, Ohio; a sister, Janet Haddix of Waynesville, Ohio; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Brookville, Ind. Luis Hampton "Hank" Garmon, 85, of Elsmere, died at 11:57 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired alto sax player and a member of Musicians Union Local No. 1, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen Ruth Holyoke Garmon; a daughter, Gayle Laible; a son, Gary Garmon; and four grandchildren.
Private services will be at his daughter's home on Sunday. Mr. Garmon bequeathed his body to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Virginia K. Hischmiller, 91, of Fort Mitchell, died at 5:18 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Covington. She was a retired saleswoman with Shillito's Department Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Bromley Christian Church, Florence YMCA and Lakeside Presbyterian Church Senior Citizens, Lakeside Park.
Her husband, Harry Hischmiller, died in 1977.
Survivors include a sister, Esther Krebs of Lakeside Park.

Rebecca Marie Kremer, 11, of Edgewood, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She graduated the fourth grade at Fort Wright Elementary School and was a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood.
Survivors include her parents, Larry and Jorja Csiszar Kremer of Edgewood; sisters, Elizabeth Kremer and Victoria Kremer, both of Edgewood; a brother, Franklin Kremer of Edgewood; and grandparents, Margaret Kremer of Villa Hills, Albert and Deborah Csiszar of Cincinnati.

Thomas D. Millichamp, 84, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired painter and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa K. Millichamp of Florence; nieces and nephews.

Phrona Taulbee Woolery Morgan, 93, of Newport, died Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Husbands, Dueard Taulbee and Albert Morgan, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Phyllis Jean Wilson of Middletown, Ohio, Loretta Miller of Cleveland, Tenn., and Mary Anderson of Florida; sisters, Mary Jo Woolery, Catherine Hinkle and Pearl Woolery, all of Lexington; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eaton Cemetery, Clay City.
Carl D. Nugent, 37, of San Francisco, Calif., formerly of Lakeside Park, died at 5:30 p.m. June 22 at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco.
Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Nugent of Lake side Park; a brother, Brian Nugent of Lakeside Park; sisters, Jean Heldman and Mary Bowman, both of Cincinnati, and Cathy Heneghan and Tina Conradi, both of Hebron.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Velma Lee Roth, 80, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of Silver Grove and St. Thomas seniors groups. Her husband, Sylvester Roth, died in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Rita Brock of Highland Heights; brothers, Charles Spaulding and Melvin Spaulding, both of Alexandria, and Robert Spaulding of Newtown, Ohio; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Sara Katherine Scent, 67, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired teacher with the Bellevue Board of Education, a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas and a volunteer with the Cincinnati Zoo.
Survivors include a brother, Dick Scent of Williamsburg, Va.; and a sister, Lois King Short of Bozeman, Montana.

Wilbur Lee Strause, 74, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a reired maintenance technician with American Sign Co., and a member of the American Legion post in Dry Ridge.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Strause; sons, Danny Lee Strause of Independence, Michael Gene Strause of Covington, William Douglas Strause of Killeen, Texas, and Jerry Douglas Northcutt of Crittenden; a sister, Shirley Mae Beagle of Covington; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
