Raymond Altemeier, grocery owner
Raymond E. Altemeier owned a popular grocery store in Covington.
He opened Ray's Poultry at 11th and Greenup in the 1930s and moved it about 10 years later to Maryland Avenue. He kept the store for about 20 years.
Mr. Altemeier sold fresh chickens and turkeys, along with rabbit, said a daughter, Charlene Banar of Independence.
Mr. Altemeier donated food to orphanages during the holidays and often helped people who were down on their luck, Mrs. Banar said. "He was good to everybody. He didn't want to see anyone go without," Mrs. Banar said.
Mr. Altemeier, 91, of Trenton, Fla., formerly of Covington, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday at his home.
Mr. Altemeier was born in Cincinnati but spent a good portion of his life in Covington before retiring years ago to Florida.
He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed being around people, his daughter said.
"He'd always get the last laugh," Mrs. Banar said. "Everyone on Greenup Street knew him as 'Mr. Ray."'
Other survivors include his wife, Doris Girkison Altemeier; another daughter, Helen Rae Neyhart of McCloud, Calif.; stepdaughters, Lenore Traylor and Angela Lucas, both of Huntington, W.Va., 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Mary Elizabeth Blair, 33, of Franklin, Ohio, formerly of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Fairfield Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a shipping clerk with Isotoner Corp.
Survivors include her parents, James R. and Mary Ann Eifert Blair of Erlanger; a brother, James D. Blair of Erlanger; a sister, Patricia Blair of Louisville; and her grandmother, Beatrice Pryor of Pikeville.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Viola Early, 97, of Ludlow, died Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Robert Lee Griffin,46, of Covington, died at 5 p.m. Monday at his home.
There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. C&C; Mortuary Service, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Virginia Halderman,71, of Middletown, Ohio, formerly of Visalia, died Wednesday at her home. She was a former owner of Lady Finelle Cosmetics Co., and a member of North Fairfield Baptist Church in Cincinnati and a former member of Visalia Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Halderman; a son, Dennis Halderman of Middletown; a daughter, Deborah Tuttle of Middletown; brothers, Earl Jackson of Winchester, Ohio, Wendell Jackson of Independence, Paul Jackson of Alexandria and Charles Jackson of Louisville; sisters, Nancy Massey of Independence and Mildred Has tings of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at North Fairfield Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Nina Jo Groves Harris, 82, of Florence, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital
East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired seamstress with Palm Beach Clothing Co. Her husbands, Reginald Groves and Jay Harris, died in 1964 and 1975, respectively.
Survivors include sons, Joseph F. Groves of Hobbs, N.M., and Richard Groves of Fairfield, Ohio; a daughter, Patricia Groves of Florence; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Emory Dennis Helton, 56, of Maysville, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a self-employed construction worker and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Maysville, and the Maysville Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue Strode Helton; sons, Tracy Helton of Mays Lick, Todd Helton and Mark Helton, both of Maysville; sisters, Annette V. Mitchell of Fort Mitchell and Bonnie Mat tingly of Maysville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
Verna Kennedy, 92, of Covington, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Village, Erlanger. She was a retired clerk.
Survivors include sons, Roy Hutton of Sarasota, Fla., and Charles Hutton and William Hutton, both of North Carolina; daughters, Betty Hutchinson of Cincinnati, Linda Roberts and Laura Osburn, both of Covington; brothers, James Walls of Fort Thomas and Jack Walls of Overland Park, Kan.; sisters, Jewell Painter of Highland Heights and Helen Hemmer of Schertz, Texas; 26 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Knight, 92, of Cincinnati, formerly of Elsmere, died Wednesday at Deer Park Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a retired cashier with Sinton and Hilton hotels, and a member of Erlanger United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
Sons, Charles Lutz (1983), James Lutz (1986), C. H. "Barney" Lutz (1992) and Harold C. "Buck" Lutz (1999), all preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Doris H. Bailey of Florence and Irma J. Luthy of Fayetteville, N.C.; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

William Robert Lambert, 75, of Covington, died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Eliza beth Medical Center North in Covington. He was a retired pharmacist and owner of Taylor Mill Drugs. He was a member of St. Patrick Church, Independence, and Taylor Mill Lions. Sons, Stevie Lambert and Bill Lambert, died in 1968 and 1994, respectively.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Lou Lambert; a son, James Lambert of Covington; a daughter, Kathy Ponder of Covington; three grandsons and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Thomas J. Luggen, 44, of Cold Spring, died Tuesday at his home. He was an engineer with Baker Concrete, Monroe, Ohio, a certified land surveyor and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Survivors include daughters, Mandy Luggen and Stacy Luggen, both of Cold Springs; a son, Thomas A. Luggen of Cold Spring; his parents, Adolph and Flora Luggen of Bellevue; a brother, William Luggen of Cincinnati; and a sister, Carol Schumacher of Morrow, Ohio.

George Joseph Pate, 65, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at his residence.

Emma West Rodriguez, 84, of Latonia, died at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Church of God. Her husband, John J. Rodriguez, died in 1972. A son, Richard Rodriguez, died in 1991.
Survivors include sons, John Rodriguez of Florence, Joe Rodriguez of Riverside, Calif., and Tony Rodriguez of Taylor Mill; daughters, Rosemary Wentworth of Villa Hills and Ginger Kohlhepp of Crescent Springs; a brother, Ernest West of Cincinnati; a sister, Leona Montermelow of Erlanger; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Diane M. Sandhas, 72, of Southgate, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of John R. Little VFW Post No. 3186 Auxiliary in Southgate and Southgate Super Seniors.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Sandhas of Southgate; a son, Dave Sandhas of Cold Spring; a brother, Ken Luxenberger of Erlanger; and three grandchildren.

Wyatt Mitchell Stanley, son of Eric and Tracy Stanley of Ludlow, was stillborn Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include a brother, Michael Stanley of Ludlow; a sister, Cassie Lay of Ludlow; and grandparents, Mary Ann Lay of Covington, Bruce Lay of Florence, Duane French of Covington and Burt Stanley of Ludlow.

Robert L. Steuber Sr., 72, of Hebron, died at 11:14 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired brick mason and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Michels Steuber; sons, Robert L. Steuber and Norbert J. Steuber, both of Hebron; daughters, Mary Carol Bedel of Hebron, Jane M. Napier of Burlington, Nancy A. Rademacher of Vine Grove and Marjorie B. Stauber of Edgewood; brothers, James P. Steuber II of Tamarac, Fla., and John F. Steuber of Lexington; and 13 grandchildren.

Rose Talley, 86, of Covington, died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired cashier with Scanlon's Drugstore, Covington, and a member of St. Augustine Church in Covington, and the church Pathfinders Club. Her husband, Albert "Bud" Talley, died in 1960.
Survivors include a son, Ed Talley of Villa Hills; sisters, Dorothy Klair of Florence and Betty Stewart of Covington; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
