Gladys Hinel, touched hundreds of lives as teacher
In all she did, Gladys Whitaker Hinel left a lasting impression.
Mrs. Hinel was a teacher at St. Agnes and Ninth District Elementary schools in the mid-1960s and early 1970s, touching hundreds of children's lives. After retirement, she was part of mall-walking clubs where talking with friends was as much of the attraction as ambling through local shopping malls. Through it all, she always had a special way with people.
"She was an inspiration. I can't tell you how many people have come up to me and told me how great she was," said Mrs. Hinel's daughter, former Crestview Hills Councilwoman Beverly Draud.
"And they all used the same word. They all said she was sweet."
Mrs. Hinel, 89, formerly of Fort Mitchell and more recently of Highland Crossing Assisted Living Center in Fort Wright, died Thursday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.
Mrs. Hinel taught at schools in Middlesboro and Harlan before she and her husband, James Joseph Hinel, started their family.
After taking time off to raise her children, and after the family moved to Northern Kentucky, she resumed teaching. She retired nine years later.
After her husband died in 1978, Mrs. Hinel took to walking, first through malls and later around Highland Crossing. When it rained, she walked the halls at the nursing home.
"She loved walking. It was a chance for her to get out and talk to people," Mrs. Draud said.
