Banker George E. Ries was mentor
George E. Ries distinguished himself in the banking business but took time to mentor others, support youth sports - and always put his family first.
Mr. Ries was vice president of the former Central Trust Bank of Cincinnati when he retired in the late 1980s.
He also was the first police judge in Crescent Park and later served as assistant fire chief in the city.
Mr. Ries, 74, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at his residence in Cape Coral, Fla.
"In his business and his personal life, everybody just liked him," said a son, Dan Ries of Fort Thomas. "He was very well-respected in the business community, an innovator in banking and a mentor to a lot of young guys.
"He was very recreation-oriented, and his family was very important."
Mr. Ries was a native of Newport. He developed a liking for Florida when he was stationed in Fort Myers with the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Ries worked 40 years with Central Trust. He was an innovator in the field of indirect lending, which allowed consumers to finance cars at dealerships. Mr. Ries extended the practice to the sales of mobile homes and boats.
Mr. Ries helped organize and was a coach for the Campbell County Pee Wee Football League and was a board member and coach for Campbell County Knothole baseball.
His dad's position allowed a wide-eyed 10-year-old Dan Ries to meet players like Joe Nuxhall and Gordy Coleman of the Reds.
Mr. Ries was a member of Newport Masonic Lodge No. 358 and Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge in Covington.
Other survivors include his wife, Norma Smith Ries; daughters, Barbara Litzler of Cape Coral, Fla., and Deborah Phelps of Blacksburg, Va.; a son, George Ries Jr. of Fort Thomas; a brother, Robert Ries of Bellevue; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home in Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Wavalon Nightingale Clark, 79, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Paul Eugene Clark, died in 1984.
Survivors include daughters, Deborah Rocke and Nikki Kirstein, both of Cincinnati; a son, Phillip Clark of Long Beach, Calif.; sisters, Nayciel Nightingale Collins of Indianapolis and Florence Nightingale Huff of Park Hills; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon today at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Vitas of Cincinnati, 1132 W. Richard Earles, 65, of Foster, died Friday at his residence. He was a retired truck driver for Black River Lime Co., Carntown.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Earles; daughters, Lisa Sullivan of Woodlawn, Hazel Stephenson and Jessica Harrison, both of Peach Grove, and Linda Taulbee of Butler; sons James Earles, Paul Earles and Richard Earles, all of Foster; a brother, Charles Earles of Butler; sisters, Pearl Skaggs of Germantown, Helen Belew of Butler, Ada Earles of Indiana and Brenda Earles of Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Butler.
Dorothy L. Finke, 69, of Elsmere, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere, where she was a member of the Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband, Jerome Finke; a daughter, Mary Kay Fey of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; sons, Jerry Finke of Butner, N.C., and Tom Finke and Joe Finke, both of Elsmere; a sister, Pat Duncan of Elsmere; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Mary Ruth King, 90, of Highland Heights, died at 5:40 a.m. Friday at her residence. She was a retired beautician and owner of Mary Ruth Beauty Shop, Bellevue, and a member of Church of the Nazarene, Dayton. Her husband, John Clayton King, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Steidel of Cincinnati; a son, Richard King of Greenville, Ohio; a sister, Marjorie Basye of Richmond; 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in John's Hill Cemetery, Wilder.
Henry E. "Hank" Nuelsen, 52, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at his residence. He was a self-employed truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Garner Nuelsen; and sons, Eric Nuelsen and Brett Nuelsen, both of Fort Thomas.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. May 20 at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Nuelsen Family cemetery in Michigan. Carl B. Salyers, 75, of Cincinnati, died Friday at his residence. He was a trust officer for Firstar Bank, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the Bellevue Vets. His wife, Helen Salyers, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Jeff Salyers of Beaufort, S.C., and Tom Salyers of Cincinnati; a daughter, Judy Salyers of Cincinnati; a brother, Jerome Salyers of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Margaret Springer, 76, of Maysville, died Friday at Pine Meadows Nursing Home in Lexington. She was a retired meat-packer for the former Larry's IGA, Maysville, and a member of Central Baptist Church, Maysville, and the Mason County Homemakers.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Springer; a son, Rodney Springer of Kettering, Ohio; a daughter, Dianne Bentley of Maysville; a brother, George Prather of Aberdeen, Ohio; a sister, Thelma Wilson of Georgetown, Ohio; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Garden of Memories, Maysville.
Jesse Walters, 75, of Bellevue, died at 3:05 a.m. Friday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was a retired supervisor for Hilton- Davis Co., a former Fort Thomas volunteer firefighter and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley M. Veach Walters; a daughter, Robin G. An derson of Fort Thomas; sons, Jeffery B. Walters of Commerce Township, Mich., and Steven D. Walters of Miami Heights, Ohio; a sister, Mildred Young of Highland Heights; brothers, William Walters of Burlington and Kenneth Walters of Alexandria; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Ralph J. Wilson, 81, of Florence, died at 3:40 a.m. Friday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was a retired machinist and foreman for Lodge and Shipley, Cincinnati. His wife, Amanda L. Wilson, died in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Jim Wilson of Edgewood and Glenn Wilson of Ancaster, Ontario; a sister, Sophie Schoenhoff of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Fred Wolff, 79, of Covington, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired machinist for Stewart Industries and an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church and Dayton VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Nadean Wolff of Covington; daughters, Virginia Burns of Dayton and Patricia Hartman of Covington; sisters, Dolly Bradford and Adeline Schmidt, both of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
