Clement L. Hils, loyal to God, family and country
Clement L. Hils of Edgewood was a retired FBI agent, federal probation officer, veteran, family man and Catholic of strong faith.
"At the heart of his character was an intense loyalty to God, family and country," said his wife, Janet Darbro Hils.
"His infamous wit and humorous outlook on life endeared him to many and enriched lifelong friendships."
Mr. Hils died of cancer Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 73.
Mr. Hils was a grandchild of immigrants from Holland and lived his entire life in Northern Kentucky.
He was graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He then enrolled in Xavier University in Cincinnati, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business and a master's degree in corrections.
Mr. Hils was active in the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, serving as chairman of the Cincinnati chapter. He was an FBI agent from 1951 to 1956, then became a chief U.S. probation officer in Cincinnati, a job he would hold until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Hils enjoyed golf, wood-working and was a political science and history buff.
"For years he was a loyal fan at his grandchildren's many sporting events," said Mrs. Hils.
Other survivors include sons, Steve Hils of Cincinnati and Andrew Hils of Lexington; daughters, Carrie Hanscom of Walton and Gretchen Hils of Madison, Wis.; sisters, Ellen May Goeke of Fort Wright, Ann Welch of Indianapolis, Joan Schulte of Fort Mitchell, Mary Rose Hils and Joyce Blanchet, both of Crestview Hills; brothers, Jude Hils of Crescent Springs, Dave Hils of Cincinnati and Martin "Mote" Hils of Erlanger; and four grandchildren.
Two siblings preceded Mr. Hils in death: a sister, Flora Schnorbus and a brother, Father Henry Hils, who had served as associate pastor at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Xavier High School Scholarship Fund, 600 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224; or the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI Education Fund, P. Norma F. Atkins, 65, of Newport, died Sunday at Rising Sun Care Center, Rising Sun, Ind. She was a former waitress at Emeral Chili Parlor, Bellevue.
Survivors include sons, Charles E. Atkins of Saint Louis, John W. Atkins of Newport, Harry E. Atkins of Covington, Richard S. Atkins of Southgate and James D. "Monk" Atkins of Newport; her mother, Esther Bigler of Massillon, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of the funeral home, 822 York St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
Nancy M. Bruns, 61, of Lakeside Park, died at 4:36 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medi-
cal Center South, Edgewood. She was a history professor for 38 years at Thomas More College and a theology professor at Xavier University in Cincinnati. She was a member of the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption Bishops Choir and a Woodrow Fellow.
Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Meyers of Erlanger; nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 tonight at Cathedral Basilica. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the cathedral. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Robert Kueven Cannon Sr., 89, of Fort Wright, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright. He was a retired attorney with Western-Southern Life Insurance Co. and a former city attorney for Lookout Heights. He was a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright, of the church Holy Name Society and of the Kentucky Bar Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Mitchell Cannon; a son, Robert K. Cannon Jr. of Dublin, Ohio; daughters, Mary Louise Morsby of Fort Wright and Margaret Cannon Landwehr of Villa Hills; a brother, Louis K. Cannon of Latonia; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Curtis B. Duvall, 80, of Owenton, died Monday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton. He was a bulldozer operator and a mechanic. His wife, Jane Slaughter Duvall, died in 1982.
Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Gibson of Owenton; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
Michael D. Fleenor, 50, of Covington, died May 1 at his home. He was an auto body repairman.
Survivors include sons, Michael J. Fleenor of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jonathan Fleenor of Lexington; daughters, Lora Richey and Marie Fleenor, both of Erlanger; and a brother, Tom Fleenor of Erlanger.

Ellis A. "Bo" Hurd, 60, of Highland Heights, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an engineer with CSX Railroad and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Judy DeMoss Hurd; sons, Rusty Allen Hurd and Brian Keith Hurd, both of Alexandria, Gregory Mark Hurd of Melbourne and Christopher Lee Hurd of Independence; a daughter, Pamela Lee Hurd of Alexandria; a brother, Glenn Hurd of Flatswoods; a sister, Eva Tipton of Newport; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Harrison Jent, 55, of Florence, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a surveyor with Schweitzer Construction Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Baker Jent; a son, Larry Jent of Florence; daughters, Teresa Jent and Tammy Brown, both of Florence; brothers, Willie Jent of LaGrange, Ind., Jasper Jent of Richmond, Ind., Hiram Jent of Jackson, Charles Jent of Radcliff, Paul Jent of Hazard, Randall Joe Jent of Erlanger and Alger Jent of Kite; sisters, Edith Stidham, Patricia Cullers and Olzia Williams, all of Hazard; and five grandchildren.

Ken Johnson, 54, of Butler, died Monday at his residence.

Henry E. "Hank" Nuelsen, 52, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at his residence. He was a self-employed truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Gerner Nuelsen; and sons, Eric Nuelsen and Brett Nuelsen, both of Fort Thomas.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Nuelsen Family cemetery in Michigan. Ralph Poore, 76, of Walton, died Monday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown.

Elizabeth Ann Bingham Proctor, 54, of Madison, Ind., formerly of Carroll County, died Sunday at King's Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Richard Lee Proctor Sr., died in 1993. A son, Richard Lee Proctor Jr., died in 1991.
Survivors include daughters, Jeannie Davis of Carroll ton and Judy Proctor of Worthville; sons, Frank Proctor of Milton and John Proctor of Worthville; and four grandchildren.

Franklin D. Ross, 65, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was an adjuster and supervisor with
Duro Bag Co. in Richwood, a member of Orchard Terrace Church of God, Cold Spring, and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Ross; a son, Franklin D. Ross Jr. of Covington; brothers, Woodrow Ross of Walton, Barney Ross of St. Augustine, Fla., and Russell Ross of South Carolina; sisters, Mae Ross of South Carolina, Alice Richardson and Millie Ross, both of Hamilton, Ohio, Jo Chapman of Walton, Evelyn Thompson of Atlanta and Georgette Cornell of Richmond.

LaVerne L. Talley, 69, of Covington, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a member of Alekium Temple No. 96 PHA; Kenton Lodge No. 16 F&AM Durgan Royal Arch; Kenton Commandery PHA in Covington; Voters League No. 1 of Northern Kentucky; and the Northern Kentucky Community Center. He was an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include daughters, Darlene McCurdy of Cincinnati, Sharon Talley and Patricia Talley, both of Covington; a son, Vernon Talley of Covington; stepsons, Anthony Hall and Willie Moore; a brother, William Talley of Evanston, Ill.; a sister, Marion Roland of Covington; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Covington. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.
Hattie Carpenter Kerns Taulbee, 87, of Walton, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired power machine operator
with Safeguard Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Banklick Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Jack W. Kerns of Charlotte, N.C., and Lawrence Kerns of Walton; daughters, Lucia Ann "Sis" Black, Jenny Ross and Linda "Tootie" Courtney, all of Walton, Patricia Vest of Verona and Mary Delores Cheesman of Independence; a sister, Nettie Williams of Warsaw; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mike Thompson, of Cynthiana, was found dead Wednesday at his home. He was a former horse-farm worker.
Survivors include a brother, Albert Lee Thompson of Memphis, Tenn.; and sisters, Patricia Ann Goins of Fredericksburg, Va., Hazel Jean Thompson and Darlene Johnson, both of Cynthiana.
