John Kuchle, loved garage business
John P. Kuchle, a former owner of Fort Mitchell Garage, died Thursday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 84.
Mr. Kuchle's father, Joseph, started the business as a blacksmith's shop in 1900. John and his brother, Carl Kuchle, and brother-in-law, Edward Stamm, helped build the business into a modern mechanic's shop as horses and buggies gave way to automobiles.
"My father was a gentle man, always smiling. Customers loved him," said his daughter, Nancy Ebersole of Florence.
"He was very easygoing. But he had that German Catholic work ethic.
"He would be at work first thing in the morning, and my mother wanted him to come home at 6. But, if a customer needed something, he just did it. He would work long hours. He taught us all that you worked hard. He always went out of his way for the customers."
He married
Dorothy Aulick in 1938, and they raised six children. She died in 1960. In 1969 John Kuchle married
Norma Huser, and they moved to Florida. Mr. Kuchle sold his share of the business to his brother and moved to Venice, Fla.
It was no surprise to his family when he took a job working in a garage there, his daughter said.
He also loved travel and was always ready for a new adventure. On a trip to California, he and Norma ended up as extras in the movie "Midway."
His health started to fail two years ago, and he and his wife moved back to Northern Kentucky. They shared an apartment at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills. He suffered a stroke.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. A son, Donald Kuchle, died in 1990.
