John Roberts devoted life to Glencoe
John T. Roberts worked to help his community and the people around him - whether as a volunteer firefighter making a dramatic rescue or spearheading the construction of a firehouse, or as a churchgoer who put his skills to work for his church.
Mr. Roberts, 89, died Friday.
Nearly 40 years ago, when he was a former Glencoe volunteer firefighter, Mr. Roberts rescued a little girl from a rising river. The girl had stayed in touch all those years until recently, said his wife of 60 years, Louise Roberts.
"They (the fire department) heard this car had gone into the water," his wife recalled. "It was Eagle Creek, and when they got there they found this little girl about 8 years old holding onto a tree. And the water had come up, and the little girl would have drowned if they had not rescued her from this tree."
The fact that there was even a fire department to come to the youngster's rescue was due, in large part, to Mr. Roberts. He and two other Glencoe residents felt the community needed a firehouse so badly, they had even put up their own property as collateral to ensure the facility was built.
Mr. Roberts worked to fill Glencoe's spiritual needs as well, serving nearly 40 years as deacon and trustee of Glencoe Baptist Church.
"That was his life," said Mrs. Roberts. "He wanted to see it grow in the community, and he wanted to see the church was kept up in good condition and see that the grounds were kept up."
Groundskeeping was a subject Mr. Roberts knew something about. He served as foreman for Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell until 1976. In his 15 years there, he supervised crews in the preparation of burial plots and funeral arrangements.
Mr. Roberts was a 32nd degree Mason Scottish Rite Valley of Covington. In his 24-year membership of Glencoe Masonic Lodge #498, he was a past master and treasurer.
