Robert Staat left legacy in buildings
Developer Robert Aaron Staat built a legacy throughout the tri-state, ranging from a 140-home subdivision in Kenton County to the municipal services complex in Cheviot, Ohio.
Mr. Staat, 64, died Friday at Newport Baptist Hospital in Newport, Tenn., from injuries suffered in a tractor accident at his resort home in the Smoky Mountains.
Mr. Staat, of Independence, owned and operated R.A. Staat Inc., a general contracting company, for nearly 15 years. He began as a carpenter, built the business from the ground up through hard work and a few simple rules, said his wife, Jean.
"He had three rules," recalled Mrs. Staat, who was the firm's vice president. "He always said, 'No partners. No stockholders.' And he said if he couldn't finance it, he wouldn't do it. .... But he loved to work. Nobody could keep up with him, and he did a lot of work on the jobs on his own."
Many of those jobs were through the city of Cincinnati, which chose R.A. Staat, Inc. to build the Camp Washington Commu nity Center and Cincinnati Fire Station No. 20 on Blue Rock Road. Mrs. Staat said his "pride and joy" was the Municipal Building in Cheviot, Ohio.
However, it may have been the subdivision Mr. Staat developed around his Kenton County farm home in the early 1990s that most fulfilled his dreams. Today, BrightLeaf Estates in Erlanger has more than 140 homes.
"All the streets are named after people in our family," said the Staats' daughter, Jennifer Miller. "I live on my street - Jenny Lane, and Laura lives on her street, Laura Lane .... He even had one named after his horse."
The Staats closed their contracting firm in 1993.
