'Honest John' Fugazzi, 1st Crescent Springs city clerk
John L. Fugazzi, Crescent Springs' first city clerk who was known by family and friends as "Honest John," died Thursday at his home in Crescent Springs. He was 70.
Mr. Fugazzi, originally from West Covington, moved to Crescent Springs with his wife 49 years ago, before the city was even a city.
When it was organized, Mr. Fugazzi, a Crescent Springs board member, was asked to be the city clerk.
"They always called on John to do things and help out," said his wife of 51 years, Norma.
"Everybody loved John.
"He was my friend and he was my life," she said. "And I'm going to miss him so much."
Mr. Fugazzi was a vice president of a local savings and loan company, and often made house calls when elderly customers couldn't get out of their homes.
"He was a very generous and caring person," Mrs. Fugazzi said.
Mr. Fugazzi was a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs, and for 24 years was a member of the Covington Rotary Club.
His 71st birthday would have been Monday.
He had a keen sense of humor that he held onto until the very end, said his daughter, Pam Gabbard, of Crescent Springs.
"He instilled in me that humor goes a long way, that it can get you through a lot," she said.
Other survivors include daughter, Linda Fugazzi of Fort Mitchell; sons, Jack Fugazzi of San Diego and Mark Fugazzi of West Chester, Ohio; a brother, Robert M. Fugazzi of Crescent Springs; a sister, Alice M. Silvestri of East Hanover, N.J.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Service, Cincinnati.
Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church, 2470 Lorraine Court, Crescent Springs, Ky. 4101 7; or the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Pickett Stapleton Day, 83, of Germantown, died at 1:10 a.m. Thursday at Maysville Extended Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Germantown Christian Church. Her husband, Medley Day, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a brother, Charles Stapleton of Germantown; a sister, June S. Adam of Maysville; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Lillian Josephine Graziani Dempsey, 90, of Cold Spring, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Cold Spring Baptist Church. Her husband, William R. Dempsey, died in 1967.
Survivors include sons, Charles R. Dempsey of Alexandria, Clyde R. Dempsey of Cincinnati, Dr. Jerry E. Dempsey of Fort Thomas and John R. Dempsey of Felicity, Ohio; a daughter, Audrey Kissinger of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, Charles Robert Graziani of Cold Spring; a sister, Mary Smith of Cold Spring; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cold Spring Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Charlotte Dobbling, 94, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include a son, William Dobbling of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Patricia Pulsfort of Fort Thomas; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Charles "Pete" Eibeck, 64, of Crittenden, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired Air Force technical sergeant, serving as a general's aide in Anchorage, Alaska, for most of his career. He was a former food director with British Petroleum Co., and an employee of International Superior Services Inc. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Survivors include his wife, Alice F. Eibeck; sons, John C. Eibeck and David Eibeck, both of Anchorage; a daughter, Cathryn F. Fornash of Williamstown; a brother, Dennis Eibeck of Dry Ridge; sisters, Doris Noel and Darlene Houchens, both of Williamstown, and Betty Jo Hausberger of Dry Ridge; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Bertha "Bert" Noll Higgins, 90, of Taylor Mill, died at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. She was a former teacher with St. Jude Catholic School, Bridge town, Ohio, a volunteer with Cath olic Social Services and a member of the Holy Cross Church 50 Plus Club. Her husband, Patrick H. Higgins, died in 1994.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Higgins and Patricia Lynn Higgins, both of Latonia.

Geneva Lickert, 97, of Bellevue died Thursday at Mercy Fransis can Hospital in Western Hills, Cincinnati.

Stanley Ray Losey, 18, of Wal ton, died Wednesday in Grant County in an auto accident. He was a junior at Walton Verona High School.
Survivors include his mother, Patricia L. Losey of Walton; and grandparents, James R. and Priscilla L. Losey of Walton.

Mary Rose Mahoney, 59, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died of cancer Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, E. Michael Mahoney; a son, Timothy Michael Mahoney of Chagrin Falls; daughters, Kelley Clegg of Chagrin Falls and Dianne Estroff of San Jose, Calif.; her mother, Opal Raabe of Kentucky; sisters, Dorothy Nuning of Erlanger, Betty Maley of Crestview Hills and Joann Kern of Jackson, Miss.; and nine grandchildren.

George D. Ratcliff Sr., 88, of Erlanger, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at his home. He was a retired industrial tool salesman with Queen City Supply Co. in Cincinnati, a member of Union Baptist Church, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Elnora Frakes Ratcliff; sons, George Ratcliff Jr. of Erlanger and David Ratcliff of Villa Hills; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Arthur Holmes Shelton, 79, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Newport and Covington, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired maitre d', and a member of VFW Post No. 8203 in North Port and the Nokomis, Fla., chapter of Disabled American Veterans. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Brown Shelton; sons, Bill Shel ton of Duran, Ill., Bob Shelton of Reno, Nev., and Tom Shelton of Atlanta; daughters, Arlyn Adinolfi of Venice, Fla., Joan Shelton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Lyn Shelton of Lake Worth, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Steven Douglas Starks, 39, of Covington, died at 5:25 a.m. Thurs day at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a truck driver with Kelly Brothers Lumber Co. and a member of Rosedale Baptist Church, Latonia.
Survivors include his mother, Bonnie Starks of Covington; daughters, Corina M. Starks, Alaina A. Starks and Katlyn A. Starks, all of Elsmere; brothers, James L. Starks, Danny R. Starks and James E. Jenne Setzer Wheeler, 84, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John M. Wheeler, preceded her in death.
