Gaines Lee Carter loved gardening, liked to laugh
Gaines Lee Carter loved spending time in his garden.
"He liked to raise roses. He did that a lot," said his daughter, Darline Wright. "He still had them when he moved (to a rest home) two years ago."
Mr. Carter, 84, of Carrollton, died Sunday at Swiss Villa Living Center in Vevay, Ind.
He was retired from the Kentucky Department of Highways, but, oddly, he never drove, said Ms. Wright of Carrollton.
"I don't ever remember him having a car," she said. "He walked every day to town."
Ms. Wright said she believes he didn't even have a driver's license, unless it was many years ago.
Mr. Carter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He served in seven major battles, according to Ms. Wright.
She and her sister have been collecting medals he earned to replace medals that were lost over the years.
Mr. Carter will be remembered as a loving father and a good-natured person, Ms. Wright said.
"He liked to laugh," his daughter said. "His kids made him laugh."
His wife, Edna Mae Carter, died in September 1994.
In addition to Ms. Wright, survivors include a son, Paul Carter of Madison, Ind.; two other daughters, Linda Phillips of Madison, Ind., and Wanda Mefford of Carrollton; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, 213 Fifth St., Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Carrollton I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Lillian M. Carrigan, 85, of Park Hills, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington.
Lucy DeZarn, 98, of Latonia, died Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
Arrangements are pending at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Edwin F. Drown, 88, of Newport, died at 5:15 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired truck driver with Wiedemann Brewery, Newport.
His wife, Betty Glover Roll Drown, died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Chester Drown of Highland Heights; a daughter, Margie Strange of Newport; a stepdaughter, Rosalie Cobb of Ellaville, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Lucille Gardner, 81, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth North Hospital, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Evelyn M. Knust, 96, of Villa Hills, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth South Hospital.
She was a retired bookkeeper.
Survivors include a niece, Dollas Krummen of Florence; a nephew, Paul Bogenschutz of Fort Wright and many great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Madonna Manor Chapel, 2344 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills.
No visitation is scheduled.
Arrangements are being handled by Linnemann Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Mother of God cemetery in Fort Wright.
Loretta H. Lietzenmayer, 95, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at Village Care Center in Erlanger.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home.
Dorothy J. McDanell Patten, 70, of Edgewood, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a real estate broker with Town and Country Real Estate.
She and her husband, John, also owned and operated Patten Real Estate in Florence.
John Patten died in 1985.
She also was a member of the National Speleological Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Farley of Edgewood; a sister, Marien Plunkett of Fort Mitchell; a brother, James McDanell of Warsaw; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.
Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
