Lucille Shafer Gardner was 'small, but mighty'
Lucille Shafer Gardner, who was very active in the Licking River Neighborhood Association in Covington, was remembered Tuesday as a woman who gave unselfishly of herself.
Whether it was helping a neighbor open their homes for viewing or feeding a stray cat, Mrs. Gardner would help, said a daughter, Caroline Finck of Villa Hills.
"She was a very determined lady; she was small, but mighty," Mrs. Finck said. "She wasn't overly outspoken. She spoke her mind with grace."
Mrs. Gardner, 82, of Covington, died at 12:40 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a retired credit union service manager with Baldwin United in Cincinnati, a former bookkeeper with Churn-Gold Co. in Cincinnati and Madeira Manor Catering.
Mrs. Gardner spent most of her life in the Licking River neighborhood of Covington and enjoyed helping neighbors open their homes for annual tours, her daughter said.
Whether passing out fliers, attending meetings or encouraging new neighbors, Mrs. Gardner was a local fixture, her daughter said.
"She was not only interested in the neighborhood, but also with people. She enjoyed meeting people," Mrs. Finck said.
Mrs. Gardner was a member of First United Methodist Church of Covington, White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 10, the Covington Licking River Historical Association, the Kenton County Republican Club and the Cincinnati Rose Society. Her husband, Marvin L. Gardner, died in 1995.
Other survivors include another daughter, Anita L. Rieskamp of Covington; a brother, John Shafer of Covington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. J. F. Ballard, 73, of Owenton, died Monday at Frankfort Regional Hospital. He was a carpenter, farmer and retired employee of the Department of Military Affairs.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret McDonald Ballard; sons, Johnny Ballard and Donald Ballard, both of Monterey; a brother, Gayle L. Ballard of Monterey; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery. Samual Edward Batton, 30, of Morning View, died at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kenton County Jail in Covington. He was a forklift driver for Radkin Laboratory, Florence, and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Batton; a son, Samual E. Batton; a daughter, Cameron Batton; his parents, Samual and Helen Batton of Covington; and a brother, Michael Batton of Independence.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillside Chapel Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Kaywood "Woody" Bowling, 73, of Florence, died Monday at his home. He was a retired maintenance worker with Signode Corp., a member of St. Barbara Church in Erlanger and the Knights of Columbus, and an Army veteran of World War II. A daughter, Barbara Bowling, died in 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Jennings Bowling; sons, Robert Bowling of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Michael Bowling of Verona; daughters, Patti Ashcraft of Verona, Kathy Robinson of Latonia and Helen Huffman of Berry; a stepson, Michael Petty of Verona; a stepdaughter, Connie Adkins-Ihle of Fairfield, Ohio; brothers, Donald Bowling of Aurora, Ind., Steve Bowling of Longwood, Fla., and Alonzo Bowling of Rising Sun, Ind.; a sister, Helen Updike of Elsmere; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Barbara Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Lillian M. Averbeck Carrigan, 85, of Covington, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright. She was a homemaker and a former employee of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. She was a member of Mother of God Church Ladies Society. Her husband, Joseph Carrigan, died in 1963.
Survivors include a nephew, Terry Averbeck of Edgewood; and a niece, Sister Mary Judith Averbeck, S.N.D. of Park Hills.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Thursday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Opal M. Chambers, 75, of Independence, died Tuesday at her daughter's home in Athens, Ohio. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Chambers; daughters, Delores Turner of Walton, Linda Swartz of Wisconsin, Sandra Lee Skidwell of Russellville and Deborah Ruedebusch of Athens; sons, Ronald Chambers of Williamstown, Donald Chambers and Jacksonville, Fla., and Michael Chambers of Erlanger; a sister, Joy Prope of Cincinnati; 18 grandchildren and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Entombment will be Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger.
Lucy Hurd Dezarn, 98, of Latonia, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Taylor Mill Pentecostal Church. Her husband, Elmer Dezarn, died in 1982.
Survivors include a son, Alva Dezarn of Latonia.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Taylor Mill Pentecostal Church. Roger Dunagin, 51, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a maintenance worker with Overhead Door Co., Latonia.
Survivors include a son, Roger Dunagin Jr. of Grant County; daughters, Cora Mae Dunagin of Brooksville, Rhonda Dale Dunagin of Latonia and Alona Dunagin of Florence; sisters, Shirley Bradford of Bellevue and Shelia Moore of Warsaw; and eight grandchildren.

Edith B. Gordon, 80, of Burlington, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired nurse with the hospital, and at Booth Hospital, Covington.
Survivors include a son, Rurel Gordon Jr. of Burlington; a daughter, Donna Charlene Barnett of Crawfordsville, Ind.; her mother, Elva R. Jones of Cave City; a brother, Edmond Jones of Noblesville, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
Margaret "Peggy" Grainge Habermehl, 63, of Augusta, died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday at Augusta Health Care.
She was a teacher with Augusta Independent Schools and a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Habermehl; nieces and nephews.

Chad Lucas Harlow, 24, of Sparta, died Monday at a friend's home in Carrollton. He was a tool and die apprentice with Ameriform in Carroll County and a member of Sparta Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Kyle Thomas Harlow of Columbus, Ohio; his mother and stepfather, Pam and Watson Burgess of Madison, Ind.; his father and stepmother, Donald and Leonda Harlow of Worthville; brothers, Jeramy Thomas Harlow of Vevay, Ind., and Dewey Takacy of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Amanda Jones of Madison, Ind.; half-sisters, Deidra Harlow of Carroll County and Jeri Lee Mefford of Dupont, Ind.; grandparents, Don and Donna Fornash of Sparta, Isaac Harlow of Worthville and Bonnie Harlow of Carrollton; and a great-grandmother, Maggie Harlow of Worthville.

Joshua and Jacob Haubner, sons of Jonathan and Amy Haubner of Falmouth, were stillborn Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include a sister, Kayla Haubner, at home; and grandparents, Richard and Connie Hearn of Jonesville and Paul and Carol Haubner of Falmouth.

Loretta H. Lietzenmayer, 95, of Fort Mitchell, died at 3:25 a.m. Monday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a secretary and payroll clerk with Continental Electric Co., Ludlow.
Survivors include a son, Karl Lietzenmayer of Covington; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Roy A. Munrath, 74, of Erlanger, died at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday at Baptist Village in Erlanger. He was a retired supervisor with U.S. Postal Service and a member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and the Colonel Clay Masonic Lodge No. 159 F&AM. He coached and managed several baseball teams in Northern Kentucky. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Margie Franklin of Fort Mitchell; nieces and nephews.

Virginia "Jean" May Piper, 82, of Latonia, died at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Latonia Christian Church. She was a member of the women's auxiliaries of Pohlmann-Linnemann VFW Post No. 1484 in Park Hills, Disabled American Veterans Post No. 19 and American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia. She was a member of Women of the Moose No. 985 and the Latonia Lions Club. Her husband, Clarence B. Piper Sr., died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Charles T. Frazier Sr. of Fort Wright; a stepson, C. B. Piper Jr. of Florida; daughters, Marion L. Webber and Rosella M. Wilson, both of Covington, and Beverly J. Ligon of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Dunn of Taylor Mill; 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Paul William Stratman Sr., 47, of Newburgh, Ind., formerly of Latonia, died Monday at his sister's home in Latonia. His first wife, Emma Kay Webster, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Sale; a son, Paul William Stratman Jr.; his father, John Stratman; sisters, Marcia Gilbert, Carol Kennedy Sittison, Jean Klima and Judy Simpson Mark.

Clinton C. "Jake" Sweeney, 77, of Erlanger, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired employee of the Ford Motor Co., a member of Latonia Christian Church and the American Legion, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Steckel Sweeney; and sons, Michael Sweeney of Florence, and Patrick Sweeney of Crittenden; and one grandchild.
