John Mueller Sr. worked with youths
To the teen-agers at Cincinnati's Talbert House, John Mueller Sr. might have bee n better known as "Notorious J-O-N" or "Grandpa" - that bald old guy who was like a wise mentor and a cool pal at the same time. It was just the right combination for a counselor working with troubled youth.
"The types of kids he worked with were often the roughest of the rough - a lot of inner-city youth," said his wife, Debbie Matracia Mueller, of Erlanger. "They always sent them to John and within 10 minutes the kids would walk out calm. He always said to talk softly and listen to what they say because the calmer you are, the calmer they are."
Mr. Mueller, Talbert House senior adolescent counselor, died at 7:15 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 62.
For ten of his 14 years at Talbert House he counseled teen-agers and trained many of his fellow counselors. His wife said Mr. Mueller believed many teens got in trouble because they lacked a spiritual connection. He taught teens to connect with themselves through nature and animals.
"He was a humanistic therapist who really believed in nature and spiritualism," said his wife. "And he himself was a great, great animal lover. His kids would say he would go to the animal shelter and bring back five or six dogs."
