Donald Smith, managed softball teams
Donald W. Smith was a retired traffic manager, had worked as a machinist and had run a gas station. But he will be most remembered for his involvement with softball and baseball, says his wife, Mary Smith.
"He managed many, many teams," Mrs. Smith said. "They won a lot of trophies. Quite a few men will remember him."
Mr. Smith, 78, of Cold Spring, died at 2 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Health Care Center in Highland Heights. He was a retired traffic manager for W.B. Jones Spring Co., formerly was a machinist at American Tool Works - where he managed ball teams - and he ran Don's Gulf Station in Fort Thomas. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Kersten O'Day Sportsman's Club.
He was quite a sportsman, said Mrs. Smith, noting that he liked fishing and hunting almost as much as baseball.
"He was an all-around guy," she said. "He just liked everybody."
Mr. and Mrs. Smith had been married
48 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Diana Smith of Cold Spring; sons, Nick L. Smith of Cold Spring, Donald W. Smith of Cincinnati and Scott A. Smith and Timothy D. Smith, both of Florence; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Thomas Church, 26 E. Villa Place, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Mamie Louise Quillen Lowe Anness, 93, of Independence, died Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a retired housekeeper for St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Her first husband, James W. Lowe, died in 1958; her second husband, Opal Anness, died in 1975; and a son, Franklin D. Lowe, died in 1995.
Survivors include sons, Clyde W. Lowe and Richard Lowe, both of Independence, James W. Lowe of Columbus, Ga., and Donald Lowe of Covington; daughters, Catherine Fields of Cincinnati, Margaret Myers of Ocala, Fla., and Barbara Jones of Middletown, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from noon until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Floyd C. Baker, 73, of Walton, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a retired service man for Tuemler Gas Co. and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Walton-Verona Masonic Lodge No. 719.
Survivors include daughters, Joyce McElfresh and Brenda Baker, both of Florence, and Barbara Turner of Fairfield, Ohio; a brother, Charles Edward Baker Jr. of Warsaw; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn "Sissy" Bell, 67, of Covington, died at 9:55 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a former owner of B&B; Pub, Covington.
Survivors include a son, Eddie Cheeseman of Covington; a daughter, Linda Funk of Covington; a brother, Ralph Bell of Florence; and one grandchild.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Lawrence Bishop, 69, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired construction worker and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bishop; stepsons, Anthony Hawkins and Ralph Hawkins; stepdaughters, Barbara Ann Hawkins, Janet Riley and Rosemary Hocker ; his mother, Lillian Bishop of Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home, 2625 Gilbert Ave., Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Dorothy K. Booth, 83, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was retired from G.E. Appliance Park, Louisville, and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Her husband, Samuel Booth, died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, Larry Booth of Falmouth; sisters, Aleene McCowan of Merritt Island, Fla., and Martha Payne of Bethlehem; a brother, Glynn Kelley of Fort Myers, Fla.; two grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville. Joseph E. Brothers, 87, of Vandalia, Ohio, formerly of Bracken County, died Monday at Harborside Health Care Center in Troy, Ohio. He was a retired assembler for National Cash Register and a member of Germantown Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Gary J. Brothers of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, LaVonna Jeannine Brothers of Vandalia; brothers, Kenneth Brothers of Waynesville, Ohio, and Eugene Brothers of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

Emma Nichols Gayle Brown, 99, of Owenton, died Saturday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of New Liberty Second Baptist Church. Her husband, Archie Brown, and a daughter, Eba Lynn Bond, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Lou Ellis Scruggs of New Liberty; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.

Helen Gertrude Hiltibrand Cottrell, 73, of Brooksville, died Sunday at Meadowview Regional Hospital in Maysville. She formerly worked as a utility girl and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Her husband, Charles Cottrell Sr., died in 1994.
Survivors include sons, Myron Baldwin of Concord, Calif. and Michael R. Baldwin of Dry Ridge; daughters, Linda Burnett of Union City, Tenn., Ellena Sue Martin of Maysville, Pamela R. Tull of Brooksville and Jo R. Williamson of Cold Spring; stepsons, Charles Cottrell Jr. of Cincinnati and Christopher Cottrell of Freemont, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Luella Alexander of Cincinnati; brothers, Harold Hiltibrand of Covington and Frank Hiltibrand of Newport; a sister, Dorothy Wheeler of Huntington, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, five step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Nancy Gravett, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at her residence. She was a retired teacher for the Fort Thomas Public Schools and a member of Order of Eastern Star, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Robert Gravett, died in 1989.
Survivors include sons, John Gravett and Robert Gravett, both of Fort Thomas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery.
Dorothy Ann Hodge, 64, of Covington, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday at her residence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Hodge; sons, Jay Hodge of Louisville and Kevin Hodge of Fort Mitchell; daugh ters, Donna Thornton, Denise Keathley and Tracie Smith, all of Covington, and Helen Hesketh of Newtown, Ohio; sisters, Elizabeth Strickland of Louisville, Harriett Johnson of Otto, N.C., and Lottie Hunter of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.

Allie G. Hudson, 69, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

Pearl M. Hughes, 78, of Latonia, died at 10:28 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Archer B. Hughes, died in 1944. A daughter, Barbara Jean "Robin" Hughes, died in 1981.
Survivors include a son, John C. Hughes of Alexandria; a brother, Richard Mulwee of Ocala, Fla.; sisters, Estell Vaughn, Georgia Dickens and Vickie White, all of Cleveland, Ohio, Edith Swift of Bellevue and Mary Meyer of Ocala, Fla.; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jane Reese Hutchison, 78, of Augusta, died Monday at Augusta Health Care Center in Augusta. She was a retired office clerk and bookkeeper for Bulk Transit, Augusta. She was a member of Augusta Christian Church; Order of Eastern Star, Augusta chapter; and Auxiliary of Gideons International. Her husband, Omar Tracy Hutchison, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda North of Augusta.

James W. Johnson, 85, of Covington, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. He was a retired serviceman and repair man for B.J. Novelty.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Beatrice Coleman Johnson; a daughter, Molly Marie Collins of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Audrey Martin, 73, of Latonia, died Sunday at her residence. She was a retired accounting clerk for Internal Revenue Service, Cincinnati, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and active in the Young at Heart Club.

Joseph F. Moore, 60, of Newport, died Friday at Deupree Community Care Center in Cincinnati. He was a retired tool and die maker for Ford Motor Co.

Morgan Elizabeth Poole, daughter of Marty and Keri Poole of Florence, died shortly after birth Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

William A. Requardt, 79, of Vevay, Ind., formerly of Erlanger, died Monday at Swiss Villa Living Center in Vevay. He was a part-time farmer and a member of Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park.

Anthony Phillip Steffen, 81, of Cold Spring, died at 9:15 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired manager for Sears and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph Holy Name Society, Cold Spring; and Sears Retirement Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Pearman of Fresno, Calif.; brothers, Maurice Steffen and Raymond Steffen, both of Cold Spring; a sister, Marie Kinstler of Alexandria; and two grandchildren.
