John 'Mike' Guenther, loving father, gardener, served on Edgewood Council
John "Mike" Guenther didn't need the limelight to perform as a member of the Edgewood City Council, as a sheet metal worker or as a crossing guard.
Mr. Guenther wanted to better his family and his community, said a daughter, Nancy Woeste of Edgewood.
"He was a very loving, kind, man who would do anything for anyone," Mrs. Woeste said.
"He was soft-spoken. He was the kind who would stay in the background, but you knew where he stood."
Mr. Guenther, 80, of Edgewood, died Monday at his home. He was a retired sheet metal worker with Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 24.
A Covington native, Mr. Guenther served as a member of the Edgewood City Council during the 1960s. He was a member of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood and the Monte Carlo Club, and was a former crossing guard with Edgewood schools. His wife, Mildred Guenther, died in 1989.
As a council member, Mr. Guenther wanted his growing community to preserve greenspace for families, his daughter said. He became a crossing guard during his retirement because he enjoyed being around children, Mrs. Woeste said.
Mr. Guenther was an excellent gardener who raised green beans, corn and potatoes to feed his family, Mrs. Woeste said.
"He had a huge garden. He would feed us and then sell or give food away," Mrs. Woeste said.
"He was just a giving person."
Besides his daughter, Mr. Guenther is also survived by his sons, Denny Guenther and Greg Guenther, both of Edgewood, Jay Guenther of Taylor Mill and Jeff Guenther of Independence; daughters, Sandy Hoffer and Colleen Wright, both of Edgewood, and Joyce Summer of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Louise Nagelisen of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Mary Wilson of Edgewood; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
