Richard 'Nub' Hardin, Highlands booster
The Highlands High School soccer team called him "Grandpa."
Other friends and loved ones called him "Nub."
And no matter where Richard "Nub" Clarence Hardin was, he connected with people, said his son, Rob Hardin.
The elder Hardin, 70, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a ceramic tile setter by trade, loved youth sports, and was always "in contact with people," said his son, also of Bellevue.
When Rob Hardin and his brother Rick, now of Fort Thomas, were growing up, their father coached peewee football.
"And when grandkids came along, you couldn't keep him away from a soccer or basketball game," Rob Hardin said.
He used to drive members of the Highlands High soccer team around and pick them up if they needed a ride. Kids used to pile into his pickup truck, Rob Hardin said.
Then, when illness prevented him from going to the district championship game this past fall - the first game of the season that Mr. Hardin missed - the team signed the game ball after the contest and gave it to one of Mr. Hardin's grandsons to present on the team's behalf.
Mr. Hardin was a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas, Bellevue Vets, and Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge No. 607, Dayton. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Lodge of Covington, and a Navy veteran.
He got the nickname "Nub" as a baby because he weighed only a few pounds and was "no bigger than a nub of corn," said his wife, Carol Bricking Hardin. With eight brothers and sisters, the nickname stuck, she said.
In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by a brother, Bill Hardin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Peggy Olinger of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.
