Joseph Goodbody, veteran of WWII
Joseph E. Goodbody, a hard-working Ludlow native and a retired mail sorter with the U.S. Postal Service, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was 88.
Mr. Goodbody was born and raised in the small river city where his father was a founding member of the Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus. He later moved to Dent, Ohio, after his mother passed away.
A member of the Knights, himself, Mr. Goodbody was always willing to help out with festivals and bingo nights, his wife said.
"He was a very nice person," said Rose Schottelkotte Goodbody, his wife of almost 50 years. "He was always willing to work."
Mr. and Mrs. Goodbody met through mutual friends while dancing at Coney Island. Mrs. Goodbody said they were looking forward to their 50th anniversary.
"I'm going to miss him," she said.
Her husband had an Irish wit and "always had some kind of cute saying," Mrs. Goodbody said.
He would often tell stories to their children and also take the time to talk with other neighborhood children, she said.
Mr. Goodbody served in the Army during World War II, in a chemical warfare unit in England. He was a member of Bishop Flaget Assembly No. 307 and Ludlow Vets.
He was also a member of St. Antoninus Church, Cincinnati, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Delhi Senior Citizens and Green Township Senior Citizens.
Other survivors include daughters, Maureen Dwyer of Harrison, Ohio, and Lois Maas of Cherry Grove, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Antoninus Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Antoninus Church.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Sidney Ward Beckham, 78, of Erlanger, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Coving-
ton. He was a truck driver with Ashland Oil Refinery, Latonia, and was a member of Simon Kenton American Legion Post No. 20 in Elsmere, Erlanger Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church. A daughter, Sharon G. Beckham, died in 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Beckham; sons, Jeffrey R. Beckham of Newport, Aaron J. Rogers of Erlanger and Brandon L. Rogers of Irvine, Calif.; daughters, Cheryl W. Horner of Philadelphia and Tamera S. Oshiro of Stanton, Calif.; brothers, George Beckham of Frankfort and Chester Beckham of Lexington; sisters, Ella J. Wright and Betty J. Davis, both of Owenton; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Anna Orliff Bishop, 90, of Vevay, Ind., formerly of Williamstown, died at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday at Swiss Villa Living Center, Vevay. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lum Bishop, died in 1998. A son, Leroy Bishop, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Minnick of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Ava Strunk of Williamstown; a brother, Louis Orliff of Cincinnati; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Cemetery, Keith. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday at Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Cecil Boyers, 95, of Latonia, died Wednesday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Ruby Coates, 90, formerly of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
George Estes Cox, 74, of Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Feb. 1 in Veterans Hospital, Gainesville. He was a retired and disa bled Army veteran.
Survivors include daughters, Cindra Auger of Cape Coral, Fla., Elain Cox of Wisconsin and Sherry Barhorst of Covington; a brother, Arnold Cox of Kansas City, Kan.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.
Bertha Henrietta Siemer Fritsch, 87, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a seamstress with Stores Schaffer in Cincinnati and a clerk with St. Vincent De Paul. She was a member of Mother of God Church in Covington, and was a member of the church Altar Society. Her husband, William P. Fritsch, died in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Pete Fritsch of Cincinnati; and two granddaughters.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Friday at Mother of God Church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Parish Kitchen, 141 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011. Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Ruth Schabacker, 87, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a sales representative with Shillito's department store.
Survivors include a son, Harveley Rutter of Parkersburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Beverly Schabacker of Bellevue; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Fri day at Floral Hills cemetery Chapel, Taylor Mill. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.
Manford Sebastian, 85, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday in a fire at his home. He was a retired farmer. His wife, Lila Marie House Sebastian, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Ila Yelton of Dry Ridge; a son, Joe Sebastian of Independence; sisters, Alma Porter of Lexington and Beulah Hicks of Erlanger; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sat urday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
May G. Grasmick Thomas, 102, of Fort Thomas, died at 4 p.m. Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Elbert H. Thomas, died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, Ste phen H. Thomas of Paducah; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
