Ruby Coates, devoted to church, family
Ruby F. Sparkes Coates, of Covington, a devoted church-goer whose home was always op en to her extended family, died at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington.
Mrs. Coates, 90, was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church for 60 years and a past president and teacher with the Rebecca Ruth Sunday School Class and Women's Missionary Union at the church.
Most of her friends were from the church, her son said.
"That was her life," said her eldest son, Donn Allen Coates of Cincinnati. "The church was very important to her and her family was very important."
The Coates family is a tight-knit one, he said, and his parents were the glue that held it together.
Mrs. Coates opened her arms and her home to relatives during hard times. "It didn't matter whether it was a close relative or what," he said.
Coates said he always remembered some family member or another living with him and his three siblings.
"She just loved her family," he said.
Other survivors include sons, Charles Foster Coates of Centerville, Ind., and William Michael Coates of Covington; a daughter, Frances May Bennett of New York; a sister, Mary D. McCormick of Fort Thomas; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton Cemetery. Julian Ackley, 82 of Florence, died at 5:20 a.m. Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. He was a hotel and restaurant operator and a member of Florence United Methodist Church. He was a member of Harlan Masonic Lodge No. 879, Schoffield Scottish Rite, Loyall Lions Club and the Harlan Kiwanis Club, and was an executive secretary and treasurer of the Harlan Red Cross.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Pollitte Ackley; a daughter, Linda Ackley of Covington; sons, Carlyle Ackley of Florence and David Ackley of Franklin, Ohio; brothers, Dr. Ollie Ackley of Chicago and Vernon Ackley of Harlan; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harlan United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to Florence United Methodist Church, 8585 Old Toll Road, Florence, Ky. 41042; or Harlan United Methodist Church, 201 Mound St., Harlan, Ky. 40831. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Ruth Austin, 66, of Butler, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.
Cecil Boyers, 95, of Latonia, died Wednesday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia. She was a teacher and a member of Owensboro Presbyterian Church and Boyd Presbyterian Church, Harrison County. She was an honorary Secretary of State for the Commonwealth.
Survivors include sisters, Ruth Boyers and Louella Boyers, both of Covington.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Rosedale Manor, 4250 Glenn Ave., Latonia, Ky. 41015.
William B. Daniel, 76, of Soest, Holland, formerly of Newport, died Friday in Soest. He was a retired master sergeant with the U. S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Flory Daniel; a stepdaughter, Marnice Clark of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; daughters, Theresa Mann of Biloxi, Miss., and Bonnie Valdez; a stepson, Edward Ronnenbergh of Soest; a brother, Robert Daniel of Alexandria; sisters, Lucille First of Fort Thomas, Rosella Henson of Newport and Opal Richmond of Alexandria; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Ora M. Ervin, 74, of Bellevue, died Thursday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Lloyd Ewing King, 80, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired foreman with the Kentucky Highway Department, a member of Oakland Christian Church in Pendleton County and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Sudie Dorton King; sons, Ronald King of Alexandria and Tom King of Burlington; a daughter, Rhonda Riley of Lexington; step daughters, Pattie Wolfe of Richwood, Wanda Ramsey of Mount Olivet, Sandy King of Knoxville and Jill Goins of Alexandria; a sister, Goldie Powell of Falmouth; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Oakland Christian Church, Route 4, Falmouth, Ky. 41040.
Katherine J. Mersch, of Florence, died Thursday at Salem Parke Nursing Home in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, J. "Bud" Mersch; a son, Ronald Gatewood of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Teresa Bailey of Florence; stepsons, Dave Mersch of Covington and Terry Mersch of Cincinnati; sisters, Thelma Lusby of Owenton and Ruth Hawkins of Georgetown; brothers, Russell Dunevent and Donald Dunevent, both of Owenton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.
David Douglas Smith, 25, of Dry Ridge, died at 1:40 a.m. to day at his home following a long illness.

Ernest Walter Wilder Sr., 89, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Page, and a member of Burlington Lodge No. 264 F&AM, Duffield Commandery No. 42 Royal Arch Masons, Loyal, and Benham Chapter No. 170 Royal Arch Masons.
Survivors include his wife, Dorcas Lee Wilder; a son, Dr. Ernest Walter Wilder Jr. of Burlington; daughters, Colleen King of Burlington, Jewel Faughn of Inverness, Fla., and Darlene Musselman of Florence; brothers, Leonard Wilder and Dillard Wilder, both of Cincinnati, and Roscoe Wilder of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Opal Knuckles of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Belleview Baptist Church, 6658 Fifth St., Burlington, Ky. 41005.
