Irvin Dringenburg, youth sports booster
Irvin C. Dringenburg helped organize Pee Wee Football leagues in Boone County, and made sure every child on his teams - no matter how talented - played in games.
In the early 1960s, he worked to organize the Pee Wee leagues, said his daughter, Cheryl Saalfeld of Fort Mitchell.
"He and my mom went door-to-door selling ads to the businesses and getting sponsors to pay for the uniforms and equipment," Mrs. Saalfeld said.
The first team was the Boone County Merchants, named for the merchants who contributed to support the program.
"My dad believed in giving back to the community, and he loved children," Mrs. Saalfeld said.
Mr. Dringenburg, 77, of Florence, a cattle farmer and an associate engineer with Cincinnati Bell, died Thursday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Saalfeld's older brother, Duane, was a member of the first Pee Wee football team, but Mr. Dringenburg remained active long after his children's sports careers ended.
He coached Knothole and American Legion baseball teams, his daughter said. For years, he film ed the Boone County High School football games.
The filming tower at the school's football stadium is made from telephone poles he obtained through Cincinnati Bell, Mrs. Saalfeld said.
"He'd climb up that tower every Friday, snow or sleet or rain," she said.
Mr. Dringenburg started working at Cincinnati Bell after he was discharged from the Army after World War II. He also maintained a beef cattle farm in Boone County.
"My dad was always up and moving. He'd be busy with the livestock before going to work," Mrs. Saalfeld said.
The sports programs were a family project.
"My mother had the cheerleaders and did the score keeping and bookkeeping. Dad did the practices and made sure everyone had a ride. I can't remember him ever cutting a football play er from the team.
"He found a way to let all the kids play," she said.
"He taught me honesty and integrity, to be a good sport and to find the best in people."
Mr. Dringenburg had a heart attack about 12 years ago.
In recent years he had several by-pass surgeries, and his health had deteriorated, Mrs. Saalfeld said.
"But he didn't complain," she said. "He always looked at the bright side of things."
