John Flege Sr., 103, oldest UK alum
John Blaine Flege Sr., the oldest living alumnus of the University of Kentucky, d ied Sunday at Owenton Manor in Owenton. He was 103.
Mr. Flege, a native of Grant County and also the oldest living alumnus of Williamstown High School, was a member of UK's class of 1918 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army's Quartermaster's Corps and fought in World War I.
After the war Mr. Flege returned to Grant County and farmed for awhile before becoming a teacher, following in his father's footsteps. He taught math at three high schools and was also a basketball coach. In 1924, he married
Francis Flege, who would be his wife for more than 70 years and the mother of his six children. Mrs. Flege died in 1995.
After leaving teaching, Mr. Flege worked for the state of Kentucky as a county health inspector and retired in 1960.
"Of all his his jobs, I think he loved being a father most," said his daughter, Helen Threlkeld, of Williamstown.
Born in 1897, Mr. Flege spent his childhood on the Grant County farm that has been in the Flege family since 1840. One of his sons still lives in the farmhouse.
Mr. Flege, who would have been 104 on April 2, always said he wanted to live to see the year 2000, so he could say he had lived in three centuries, his daughter said.
"I think that was his goal," Mrs. Threlkeld said. "And he did it."
Other survivors include daughters, Joyce Annette Blake and Mary Frances Sehlhorst, both of Lexington; sons, Charles Fred Flege of Dry Ridge, Dr. John Blain Flege Jr. of Cincinnati and Robert David Flege of Florence; a brother, Raymond Kenneth Flege of Atlanta; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Dorothy S. Bedinger, 91, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Walton, died March 7 at Westminster Shores Health Center in St. Petersburg. She was a retired secretary and a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include her husband, George Gaines Bedinger.
Graveside services will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery. Burial will be in Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, is handling arrangements.
Rhonda Bray, 91, formerly of Covington, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday at Crestview Park Care Center in Cincinnati.
Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Donald Daniel "Chief" Dammert, 93, of Falmouth, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a former art director for the former Shillito's Department Store and former artist for The Cincinnati Post. His wife, Suzanne Dammert, died in 1984.
Survivors include daughters, Nanci Bonar of Falmouth and Suzanne Newport of Crescent Springs; sons, Donald Dammert Jr. of Ellenton, Fla., Glenn Dammert of Mariemont, Ohio, and John Wayne Dammert of Alexandria; brothers, Russell Dammert of Alexandria and Stanley Dammert of Augusta; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Bracken County.
Walter Joseph "Lefty" Goodall Jr., 77, of Alexandria, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Bellevue, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church, Alexandria, and a former minor league baseball pitcher and scout for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He also coached the Acme Steel baseball team in Wilder from 1963 to 1967.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Riddle Goodall; daughters, Mary Whitford of Lexington, Sue Even of Finneytown, Ohio, and Renee Thompson of Independence; and a sister, Ruth Flammer of Detroit. Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Frank Leland Grimes, 78, of Carrollton, died Saturday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital in LaGrange. He was a retired co-owner of Martin's Nursery, Carrollton, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Carrollton; American Legion Post No. 41, Carrollton; American Nurserymen Association; and Kentucky Nurserymen Association.
Survivors include his wife, Edwinna Martin Grimes; sons, Jerry Grimes of Frankfort and Eddie Grimes of Carrollton; a sister, Rosalie Kruse of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Emma Frances Hodges, 67, formerly of Hebron, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Woodspoint Care Center in Florence. She was a retired self-employed in-home caregiver. A son, Donald E. Hodges, died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd Hodges of Cold Spring; a daughter, Kathy R. Burdette of Crescent Springs; a brother, Lloyd E. Moore of Union; a sister, Gloria Smith of He bron; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Norma Katherine Houston, 72, of Sparta, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of United Fellowship Church, Warsaw. Her husband, James Houston, died in 1981.
Survivors include daughters, Trenda Lajean Hakes of Surry, Va., Nancy Elizabeth Mayhew of Sparta and Mendee K. Houston of Warsaw; a son, James William Houston of Warsaw; half-sisters, Glenda Crews of Lexington, S.C., and Sue Hannah of Ashland City, Tenn.; half-brothers, James Hannah of Slidell, La., Jack Hannah of Ashland City, Tenn., and Michael Hannah of Unionville, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Tanner Kendall, 94, of Walton, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a former part owner of Dixie Chevrolet Garage, Walton. His wife, Marie Grim Kendall, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughters, Donna K. Oberst of Louisville and Carol K. Smith of Owensboro; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mattie Turner Phillips, 86, of Newport, died at 1 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Everson of Newport; sons, Bill Phillips of Newport and Jim Phillips of Tampa; sisters, Rose Kammerer and Charl Jones, both of Newport, and Polly Cole of Florida; a brother, Paul Turner of Milan, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Charlene "Carney" Treadway, 53, of Taylor Mill, died at 3:15 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a clerk in the returns department of Fifth Third Bank, Cincinnati. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia, and a former member of Decoursey Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother, Clara Treadway of Taylor Mill; a brother, Michael Treadway of Taylor Mill; and sisters, Darlene Magee of Morning View and Pat Carlisle of Taylor Mill.

Virgil "Bus" Wagel, 80, of Bracken County, died Saturday at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He was retired from the Kentucky State Highway Department.
Survivors include his wife, Dora L. Wagel; a son, Larry Wagel of Brooksville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Nellie J. Wieck, 78, of Covington, died at 5:25 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a former personnel manager for Scanlon Drugs and a member of St. Benedict Church, Covington. Her husband, Bernard J. Wieck, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Fred Wieck of Cincinnati, Jim Wieck of Wilder and Tom Wieck of Newport; a sister, Lil Slater of Live Oak, Fla.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
