Leslie Yates, made learning fun for students
Leslie Jane Berg Yates was a creative teacher who made learning fun. She taught biology and science at Lloyd High School in Erlanger for two years in the early 1970s before moving to North Carolina.
"She made the material interesting, and I think that's why her students liked her so much," said her mother, Lorine Berg of Fort Mitchell. "She had one class that she taught some of the lower students in science and on in-service days teachers from other schools came to watch her teach. So, she must have been awfully good."
Mrs. Yates, 47, of West Jefferson, N.C., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died March 3 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was also a teacher for the Ashe County, N.C., School System.
Mrs. Yates was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Northern Kentucky University and Appalachian State.
Mrs. Yates was active in her church. She also enjoyed reading.
"She was a wonderful mother," Mrs. Berg said.
Other survivors include her husband, George E. Yates; a son, Michael Yates at home; a daughter, Shannon Yates at home; her father Leslie Berg of Fort Mitchell; and a brother, James M. Berg of Covington.
Mass of Christian burial was March 7 at St. Francis Church, Jefferson, N.C. Memorials are suggested to Susan B. Komen Foundation, P. O. Box 65309, Dallas, Texas 75265; or St. Jude Children's Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Box 318, Memphis, Tenn. 38101. Badger Funeral Home, West Jefferson, N.C., handled arrangements.
Timothy Anderson, 41, of Southgate, died Monday at his home. He was a carpenter with American Store Fixtures and a member of the Southwest Ohio Carpenter's Union.
Survivors include a son, Timmy Anderson of Southgate; a daughter, Tonya Anderson of Newport; his mother, Phyllis Anderson of Southgate; a brother, Rick Anderson of Melbourne; sisters, Lisa Anderson and Melissa Davidson, both of Silver Grove; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Hobert Lenox Biddle, 66, of Sunrise, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center, Lexington. He was a retired bulldozer operator, a past commander of the Cynthiana VFW Post and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Hill Biddle; a son, Greg L. Biddle of Harrison County; a daughter, Debbie L. Biddle of Cynthiana; a brother, Tommy Biddle of Harrison County; sisters, Marie Ferguson of Walton, Betty Lou Smith of Falmouth, Brenda Eckler of Harrison County and Toni Templeton of Cynthiana; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Benson Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
Rhoda Ruth Smith Bray, 90, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday at Crestview Parke Care Center, Cincinnati. She was a retired supervisor with the Cincinnati Playing Card Co.
Survivors include sons, Charles Smith of Cincinnati and Bobby Smith of Covington; brothers, James Gibson and Hiram Gibson, both of London, and Delbert Gibson of Manchester; sisters, Nancy Wagers and Oma Henson, both of Manchester; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
John C. Diesman, 68, of Erlanger, died Monday at his home. He was a sales representative with Deluxe Engraving for 45 years, and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. Diesman; daughters, Kathleen Diesman-McDavid of Cold Spring, Je anette Funk of Cincinnati and Jill Diesman of Covington; sons, John D. Diesman of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Patrick Diesman of Cold Spring; stepsons, Michael Barnes of Villa Hills and Dennis Barnes of Wilder; brothers, Norman Diesman of Mount Orab, Ohio, Lawrence Diesman of Latonia, William Diesman and Robert Diesman, both of Highland Heights; sisters, Mildred Shook of Jacksonville, Fla., Martha Welch of Ashland, Janet Chalk of High land Heights and Mary W. Seyberth and Rosemary Hopper, both of Bellevue; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Duncan, 62, of Mays Lick, died at 1:03 a.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a re tired farmer and a former em ployee of the Mason County School System.
Survivors include his wife, Mamie Emmons Duncan; daughters, Dinah Sue Thomas and Janet K. Bickley, both of Maysville, and Kimberly Beth McCane of Butler; sons, Ronnie E. Duncan of North Carolina, John Mark Duncan of Maysville and Gregory Allen Duncan of Mays Lick; sisters, Juanita Fry man of Mays Lick, Audrey Tupts of Maysville, Helen Shannon of Flemingsburg, Shelby Adamson of Fleming County, Barbara Fry man of Carlisle and Bess Stew art of Mount Olivet; brothers, Arthur "Bob" Duncan Jr. of Owingsville, Eugene Duncan of Sharpsburg and John Duncan of Maysville; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

James Victor Ellis, 56, of Carrollton, died Monday at his home. He was a retired painting contractor and a Carrollton building inspector, and a mem ber of St. Joseph Church, War saw.
Survivors include daughters, Helen Marie Farris and Tammy Ruth Travelstead, both of Carmi, Ill.; his father and stepmother, Vernon and Mary Mertz Ellis of Warsaw; brothers, Mark Mertz and Eddie Mertz, both of Warsaw, and Bobby Mertz of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Verna Lee Moore, Debra Johnson, Barbara Webster and Brenda Smith, all of Warsaw, and Laura Ruth Evans of Evansville, Ind.; and two grandchildren.

Marion F. Frye, 91, of Lexington, formerly of Newport, died at 12 a.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital East, Lexington. He was the retired owner of Bardstown Finance Co. and Home Finance Co., Lexington. His wife, Lona Kirst Frye, and a son, Paul Frye, both preceded him in death. Survivors include sons, David Frye of Lexington, Fred Frye of Roswell, Ga.; sisters, Jean Dorsel of Crestview Hills, Mary Frye of Cincinnati, Eleanor Caldwell of Campbell County and Lee Fessler of Fort Wright; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Betty Jean Hoelscher, 73, of Southgate, died Jan. 4 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thom as. She was a baker with Perkins.
Survivors include friends.

Luella A. Huddleston, 86, of Highland Heights, died at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was a waitress with Mills Restaurant, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Harper of Florence.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Marilyn K. Karnes, 58, of Mission Viejo, Calif., formerly of Covington, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a flight attendant with American Air lines for 38 years, and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Covington.
Survivors include her father, Charles E. Pemberton Sr. of Covington; brothers, Ed Pemberton of Knoxville, Tenn., and John P. Pemberton of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Peggy Pemberton Kessler of Valencia, Calif.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. William M. Lay, 80, of Dry Ridge, died today at his home.

Richard V. Martella, 45, of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at the Days Inn, Fort Wright.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki Raye Daniels Martella; a son, Kevin Martella of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Nicolle Martella of Fort Mitchell; his mother, Lorraine Martella of Cincinnati; and brothers, James Martella and John Martella, both of Cincinnati.

Whitley S. Oliver Jr., 73, of Taylor Mill, died at 5:45 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, High land Heights. He was an accountant with Will son Dairy, Cincinnati, and a member of Latonia Christian Church.

Aurelia "Margie" Reed, 81, of Harrison County, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and member of Cynthiana Baptist Church. Her husband, Edward S. Reed, preceded her in death.

Charles S. Sharp, 72, of Worthville, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was a retired salesman for American Dairy Association and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Carrollton Lodge No. 134 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Mae Hayes Sharp; a son, Charles T. Edward M. Webster, 75, of Covington, died at 1:15 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a retired self-employed plasterer and painter. His wife, Ida Mae Boone Webster, died in 1979.

Lydia Lou Linton Wilson, 74, of Independence, died Monday at Mercy Franciscan Terrace, Cincinnati. She was a home maker. Her husband, Ray Wil son, died in 1985.
