Ruby Pompilio, co-owned Pompilio's restaurant
Untold thousands of people ate Ruby West Pompilio's cooking.
Mrs. Pompilio was a former owner of Pompilio's Restaurant, a popular eatery at Sixth and Washington streets in Newport since 1933.
She cooked there for about 20 years - making the ravioli by hand and making sure the family spaghetti-sauce recipe was prepared correctly - from the early 1960s until the family sold the business in 1982.
Mrs. Pompilio, 73, of Fort Thomas, died at 6:20 a.m. Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Her husband, Mathew, died in 1992.
Mrs. Pompilio's son, Dennis W. Pompilio of Fort Thomas, likes to remember his mother's lov e for family. "She was a good person, very unselfish, a very, very hard worker," Mr. Pompilio said. "Her family, taking care of her family, was first and foremost on her mind."
Other survivors include sons John M. Pompilio of Fort Thomas and Douglas G. Pompilio of Huber Heights, Ohio; sisters, Eudena Wallace of Somerset and Irene Brown of Fort Thomas; a brother, Darwin West of Somerset; and six grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation begins there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Joan Harlsey Bell, 62, of Brandon, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Saturday at Brandon Regional Hospital.

Elbern Bowling, 79, of Kenton County, died at 3:10 a.m. today at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Alfred Griffith, 84, of Independence, died at 2:27 p.m. Sunday at his residence.

James "Jimmy" Haydon, 68, of Owenton, died Saturday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton. He was a retired auditor for the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet and a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Owenton, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Johnson Haydon; daughters, Kim Furnish of Pleasant Home and Missy Perkins of Lockport; a brother, Bobby Haydon of Frankfort; and one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton IOOF Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Highway 22, Owenton, Ky. 40359.
Dorothy Ann Hellmann, 89, of Fort Wright, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. She was a homemaker and a former volunteer at Madonna Manor and St. Elizabeth Medical Center North.
Survivors include sons, George Thomas Hellmann of Richmond, Ill., Jerome Hellmann of Crestview Hills, Fredrick B. Hellmann of Harrison, Ohio, Stephan D. Hellmann of Lexington and Dennis E. Hellmann of Louisville; and daughters, Sister Mary Carol Hellmann, OSB, of Villa Hills, Dottie Due of Walton, Marney Bresser of Crestview Hills and Ginny Robke of Fort Wright.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Robin "Rob" Bronston Jenkins, 46, of Richmond, died Saturday at his residence. He was a construction worker for Home Interiors, Richmond.
Survivors include a son, Todd B. Jenkins of Melbourne; his mother, Mildred Jenkins of Williamstown; brothers, Price Veach Jenkins of Richmond and Dan Ward Jenkins of Newport; and sisters, Beverly Darlene Carter of Williamstown, Sondra Hudgins of Newport and Laura JoAnn Conway of Falmouth.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Davis Cemetery, Scott County. Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth, is handling arrangements.
R.D. "Mac" McMurray, 75, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired salesman for Central School Supply and an Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Purple Heart and was awarded a Silver Star and Bronze Star for valor. He was past president of the Fort Thomas Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara McMurray; sons, Dr. Sherman D. McMurray of Indianapolis, Dr. Stephen D. McMurray of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Scott D. McMurray of Fort Thomas; a sister, Maryetta Marquet of Greenville, Ind.; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church of Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Howard James Newton, 72, of Park Hills, died at 2:24 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a retired law enforcement officer for Fort Wright and Kenton County, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fraternal Order of Police, Covington.
Survivors include sons, Howard James Newton II of Westerville, Ohio, and Robert Nelson Newton of Kenwood, Ohio; brothers, Robert Newton of Fort Mitchell and Ted Newton of Newport; and four grandchildren.
No services are planned. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Iona Craig Perkins, 67, formerly of Augusta, died Friday at Maysville Extended Care Facility in Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of Augusta Christian Church. Her husband, Carlie Perkins Jr., died in 1984.
Survivors include a son, Danny Perkins of Ashville, N.C.; daughters, Judith Perkins and Patricia Poe, both of Augusta, Brenda Wolfe of Brooksville and Lori Meyer of Germantown; a sister, Nellie Relly of Cincinnati; a brother, Charles Craig of Maysville; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will begin at noon today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery, Bracken County.
Vera Louise Terlau Remke, 75, of Lakeside Park, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. She was involved with the Arthritis Foundation, Al-Anon, Blessed Sacrament School and Notre Dame Academy.
Survivors include a son, Richard W. Remke of Cincinnati; daughters, Mary Ann Remke Miller of Wyoming, Ohio, and Carolyn M. Remke of Cold Spring; a brother, Jack Terlau of Erlanger, sisters, Mary V. Crotty of Villa Hills and Kathleen Terlau of Ashville, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Ruth L. Sexton, 81, of Covington, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
She was a homemaker and formerly worked for Western Union, Cincinnati. Her husband, William L. Sexton, died in 1997.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Latonia, and former member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Dayton.
Survivors include sons, Richard W. Sexton of Columbus, Ohio, and Thomas J. Sexton of Walton; a daughter, Marilyn R. Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
