Joseph Harper, involved in the community
Joseph Tillman Harper was involved in a myriad of activities, but he will be best remembered for "just being a nice guy," says his son.
Mr. Harper, of Falmouth, retired after working at the Excello Paper Co. and Meade Corp., both in Cincinnati. He was also a farmer.
He died Tuesday at the Gardens Personal Care Facility, Ocean Springs, Miss.
He was 91.
Mr. Harper was a member of the American Revolution Community Concert Association; the Gulf Coast Symphony; the 1699 Historical Committee; Ocean Springs Genealogical Society; Hurricane Flight of the Order of Daedalians; and an honorary member of Gulf Coast Chapter Military Orders of World Wars.
He was an elder of Mount Gilead Christian Church in Harrison County.
His wife, Gladys Mildred Hall Harper, died in 1979.
His son, Air Force Col. (Ret.) Douglas A. Harper of Biloxi, Miss, said that while his father will leave a legacy of community involvement, his gentle nature will be what people remember most.
"He got along with everybody ... never got cross with anybody," Col. Harper said.
Among Mr. Harper's favorite activities was his involvement in the Sons of the American Revolution.
The younger Mr. Harper introduced his father to the group.
"I'd take him to the meetings and he went to a national convention."
For the past several years, Mr. Harper spent his winters in Mississippi fishing.
"He always enjoyed himself," his son said.
Mr. Harper is also survived by sisters, Fannie Lou Harper Hayes of Cynthiana and Glenda Jane Harper Ball of Middlesboro.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Harold W. Aylor, 88, of Walton, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center. He was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Martha L. Ryan Aylor; a stepdaughter, Sue Dillion of Walton; stepsons, Nathan Ryan of Walton, Donald Ryan and Larry Ryan, both of Independence; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Richard W. Cayse, 47, of Vil la Hills, died at 5:36 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a self-employed landscaper and co-owner of Mastercare Inc., Elsmere.
He was a member of Eastgate and Fort Thomas Corvette Club, and a member of the St. Joseph Church Holy Name Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie Cayse of Villa Hills; and sons, Michael Cayse and Daniel Cayse, both of Villa Hills.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Burial will be in Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Alex Andrew Elam, 8, of Florence, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a student at Yealey Elementary School, Florence.
Survivors include his parents, Pamela Fields Elam of Florence and David E. Elam of Park Hills; brothers, Stanley Hughes of Latonia, Kevin Hughes of Covington, and Dustan Hughes, Curtis Elam and Cory Elam, all of Florence; a sister, Amanda Elam of Florence; and grandmother, Beulah Cress of Walton.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Chris Hegge, 42, of Florence, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was disabled.
Survivors include his mother, Becky Hegge of Ludlow; and brothers, Rick Hegge of Taylor Mill and Tim Hegge of Bromley.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Samuel Eli Williams, 17, of Independence, died Tuesday at his home.
He was an employee of Burger King.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Pam and William Duncan of Independence; his father and stepmother, Clayton and Kellie Williams of Florence; a sister, Holly Williams of Independence; stepsisters, Kristin Hardin and Katie Hardin, both of Florence; brothers, Clayton Williams
Jr. and Joshua Williams, both of Florence; stepbrothers, William R. Duncan of Morning View, Tony Jones of Milford, Ohio, and Robbie Hardin of Florence; grandfather, Herdis Williams of Bethel, Ohio; and step-grandparents, James and Sandra Duncan of Independence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Erlanger.
J. Geneva Glacken Rhodes Winans, 85, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of Sherman Church of Christ, Dry Ridge, and Erlanger Eastern Star.
Her first husband, James C. Rhodes, died in 1957.
Her second husband, Howard C. Winans, died in 1976.
A son, Ellsworth F. Rhodes, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Beulah Ellen Van Arsdall of Williamstown, Alma Colleen Morgan of Gig Harbor, Wash., Linda Wininger of Dry Ridge and Carolyn Jean Rhodes of Las Vegas; a sister, Nina Jane Bryan of Hooven, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Fri day at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
