Mrs. Newton, UK AD's wife, 'own woman'
LEXINGTON - The wife of University of Kentucky athletics director C.M. Newton died after a long battle with leukemia.
Evelyn Newton was 70. She died Thursday afternoon at the University of Kentucky Medical Center with her husband and family members at her bedside.
"She was her own woman," said Larry Ivy, named to succeed C.M. Newton, who will retire this summer. "When you think of all the accomplishments and attention that Coach Newton had, she was there but she always did her own thing and was a very strong person."
Evelyn Newton had served on the board of Chrysalis House alcohol/drug abuse treatment facility and was an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
USDA's Robert Bass, devoted to family
Robert E. Bass, a retired meat inspector with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, died on March 10 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. He was 69.
Mr. Bass was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a lifelong sports enthusiast. As a young man he played football, basketball and wrestled. In later years, he won trophies bowling at Heid's Bowling Lanes in Cincinnati.
Mr. Bass was a butcher with Meyer Meat in the 1950s, and became a USDA meat inspector in 1958. It was while he was inspecting the Kahn's plant that he met Dolores Durr, whom he married
in 1974.
"The government is all business, but there was always that little twinkle in his eye," Mrs. Bass said. "The inspectors weren't supposed to talk with the people who worked there, but he started throwing little wads of paper at me with notes on them."
They eventually married
and moved to Burlington.
Both had been married
before. She had two sons and two daughters. He had four sons. "We made one big family," Mrs. Bass said.
"He was a wonderful husband and a wonderful father. He was a tease and he was a little mischievous," she said. 'The children loved him."
He retired in 1988 and filled his days with woodworking projects, bowling, sports and family.
"He loved the children and all the grandchildren," his wife said.
He became his grandchildren's greatest fan, attending their sports events.
In 1998 he had his first surgery for lung cancer. His health started failing rapidly after his second surgery in February.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons David Bass of Chicago, Bobby Bass, Allan Bass and Joe Bass, all of Cincinnati; stepsons Michael Durr of Las Vegas and Gerald Durr of Villa Hills; stepdaughters Peggy Doolin of Covington and Marion Gronotte of Union; a brother, George Bass of Finneytown, Ohio; sisters Dorothy Peterson of Covington and Shirley McComas of Cincinnati; and 17 grandchildren.
Memorial services were held March 14 at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042; or charity of donor's choice.
Walter W. Hatterick, 80, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was a retired owner and pharmacist for the former Renaker's Drug Store, Cynthiana.
He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, deacon and national Presbyterian officer; Cynthiana BPOE No. 438; and St. Andrews Masonic Lodge. He was a former president of the Cynthiana Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Hallene "Dink" Morrison Hatterick; sons, Walter W. "Sonny" Hatterick III of Cynthiana and Robert L. Hatterick of St. Louis; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Ethel Hesch, 85, of Newport, died Wednesday at Woodspoint Care Center, Florence. She was a retired dispatcher for Yellow Cab Co., Newport, and a member of Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post No. 11, Newport; and Eastern Star, Gertrude Chapter No. 19, Newport.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Hesch; daughters, Jean White of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., Joan Furnish of Highland Heights and Jane Lunsford of Erlanger; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Harold R. 'Dusty' Kembre, 52, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, Ohio.
Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Helen Strother Morgan, 94, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Shelby Manor Health Care Center in Shelbyville. She was a retired librarian for the Carroll County Library and a member of Carrollton Methodist Church and Carrollton Order of Eastern Star. Her husband, Dora Bell Morgan, died in 1960.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy Bean of Bardstown and Jayne Arnold of Shelbyville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Bedford.
James S. Mulberry, 78, of Williamstown, died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at his residence.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Herbert Stamper, 85, of Campbellsburg, died Wednesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carroll County. He was a retired farmer and a member of Cove Hill Baptist Church; Carrollton Masonic Lodge No. 134; and Scottish Rite. His wife, Margaret Stamper, died in 1998.
Survivors include sons, Robert Stamper and Danny Stamper, both of Campbellsburg; and a sister, Fannie Ross of Walton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Stamper Farm Cemetery, Campbellsburg.
Rita J. Rolfes Throckmorton, 82, of Fort Wright, died Sunday at Hermann Hospital in Houston.
