Sister Mary St. Clare, church organist
Sister Mary St. Clare of the Sisters of Notre Dame could make the pipe organ sin g, playing triumphal marches at the end of services, says her longtime friend, Sister Shauna Bankemper.
"She had a real sense of music, especially what it could do for liturgy as well as for community," said Sister Bankemper.
Sister St. Clare, of Park Hills, died Friday at the Sisters of Notre Dame Provincial House in Park Hills. She was 98.
Born Jeanette Schramm, she entered the congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1923 and made her first vows in 1926.
Sister St. Clare was an elementary teacher at Sacred Heart in Bellevue, and St. Columban in Loveland, Ohio. She was a musician at Notre Dame Academy, Covington, and was an organist at St. Agnes, Fort Wright, and at the Provincial House, where she gave private piano lessons.
Sister Bankemper recalls that her friend helped instill a deep love and respect for music. "She used music to bring people together," Sister Bankemper said. "She could sit down at a piano and start playing entertaining songs, and people would gather."
Sister St. Clare was particularly fond of classical music, and didn't like some of the music the Vatican has allowed in recent years. "That was so painful for her," Sister Bankemper said. "If she didn't like a song, she would turn her hearing aid off."
Sister St. Clare was the province's oldest sister. She would have been 99 in April.
