Dennis James Shirley, 'a very giving person'
Dennis James Shirley didn't want to see people go without food or clothing. For several years, Mr. Shirley collected items for the Hospitality House in Florence which distributed the goods to the needy.
"He was just a very giving person," said his sister, Cindy Bresser of Crescent Springs.
Mr. Shirley, 49, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a laborer with Fivefold Construction Co. in Florence and a former general manager of Holiday Inn in the Greater Cincinnati area.
Mr. Shirley was a member of Gathering Place Church of Florence, and its praise and worship group. He was an excellent cook and often prepared meals for workers at the Hospitality House.
"He was a very energetic person," said his sister. "He had a very dynamic personality. He had a zest for life."
Mr. Shirley was a runner, often entering 10K races. He also was an avid reader and loved to sing.
Other survivors include his wife, Carole Haynes Shirley; his daughter, Amy Shirley of Phoenix; his son, Andy Shirley of Phoenix; stepdaughters, Misty Keyes of Erlanger, Kristy Appel of Walton and Melody Cummins of Florence; his mother, Phyllis Shirley of Florence; a brother, Mark Shirley of Fairfield, Ohio; sisters, Diane Toebbe of Florence, Laura Shirley of Park Hills and Jane Schwartz of Demossville; and two grandchildren.
Services were at noon today at Gathering Place Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials: to Dennis Shirley Memorial Fund, in care of Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, P. O. Box 6049, Florence, Ky. 41022.
Robert Victor Buecker, 73, of Melbourne, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at his residenc e. He owned Buecker Machine and Iron Works, Newport, and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores Matilda Reuter Buecker; a son, David E. Buecker of Alexandria; a daughter, Linda Lee Velten of Alexandria; sisters, Mary Pelfrey of Cold Spring and Martha Geis of Greenhills, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Friday at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Mary Callaghan, 86, of Owenton, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a retired school teacher and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include a niece, Lou Ella Vannarsdall of Florence; and nephews, George Callaghan Sr. of Pleasant Home, Gayle Price Callaghan of Gulfport, Miss., and Bill Callaghan of Osaka, Japan.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Gratz Road, Owenton, Ky. 40359.
Mildred K. Elam, 70, of Butler, died Monday at Batavia, Ohio, Nursing Home. Her hus band, Roy Elam, died in 1950.
Survivors include daughters, Susan L. Conrad of Milford, Ohio, Beth Jacob of Butler and Carol Lammers of Florence; a sister, Annabelle English of Newport; a brother, George Bachman of Newport; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.
Earl H. Goetz, 84, of Edgewood, died at 11:50 p.m. Monday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. He was a retired employee of William Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. He worked part-time for Johnny's Toys in Latonia after retiring, assembling and repairing toys.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian M. Wehr Goetz; a son, Larry Goetz of Titusville, Fla.; daughters, Mary Buerger, Carol Spaulding and Kathy Kreger, all of Edgewood, Judy Porges of Liberty Township, Ohio, Marilyn Santerre of Cincinnati and Rose Allgaier of Loveland, Ohio; a brother, Edward Goetz of Latonia; sisters, Mabel Goetz of Latonia and Alice Smith of Edgewood; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Friday at St. Pius X Church. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church, followed by prayers. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Frank Charles Hook, 66, of Maysville, died at 6 a.m. Sunday
at West Florida Regional Medical Center, Pensacola, Fla. He was a self-employed general contractor, and a member of Flemingsburg Disabled American Veterans. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Bette Hook; daughters, Janice Fields and Donna Pugh, both of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers, Aaron E. "Gene" Hook and Ernie R. Hook, both of Maysville; two stepsons; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 1 p.m. Friday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Maysville.
Ellen Christine Wallace Layton, 85, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Grant Manor Nursin g Home, Williamstown. She retired in 1968 as savings department manager of Cumberland National Bank in Bridgeton, N.J. She also worked with Farmers and Merchants National Bank in Fairton, N.J. She was a member of Falmouth United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher.
Mrs. Layton was active in church missions, outreach and youth programs, and was an amateur artist. Her paintings won recognition at the Grant County Arts Federation/Northern Kentucky University-Grant Center juried art show. One of her works was displayed in the New Jersey governor's mansion for several months. Despite ill health, she continued painting until her death.
Survivors include her husband, Jonathan Franklin Layton; sons, Jonathan Arthur Layton of Bridgeton, N.J., and Paul Robert Layton of Butler; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County. Memorials are suggested to Falmouth United Methodist Church, Book of Remembrance Fund, Shelby St., Falmouth, Ky. 41040.
Helen L. MacMillan, 89, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at Fra nciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a nurse with the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. Her husband, Alex MacMillan, died in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Halloran of Cincinnati; a son, Alex MacMillan of Fort Thomas; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Arthritis Foundation, 7811 Laurel Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45243. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Stanford L. Meadows, 56, of Walton, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired gate supervisor with Delta Air Lines.
Survivors include sons, Scott A. Meadows of Dry Ridge and Mark T. Meadows of Williamstown; a daughter, Tracy Meadows of Covington; his mother, Betty Meadows of Akron, Ohio; brothers, Kenneth P. Meadows Jr. of Akron and Randy Meadows, both of Akron; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Harry J. Schulte, 84, of Erlanger, died at 5:51 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalesce nt Center, Newport. He was a retired bartender and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Mary Evelyn Brennen Schulte, died in 1994.
Survivors include sons, Harry E. Schulte of Lutz, Fla., and Mark J. Schulte of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Marilynn Schulte, at home; and four grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. April 8 at St. Henry Church, Erlanger. Cremation was at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Everett E. Simms, 62, of Maysville, died at 11:19 a.m. Monday at his home. He was owner of the Country Gentleman Restaurant in Maysville, and was a manager of Frisch's restaurant, Aberdeen, Ohio.
Survivors include a son, David Simms of Maysville; a daughter, Lisa Thompson of Mays Lick; a brother, Mark Simms of Maysville; sisters, Effie Gill of Marysville, Ind., Phyllis Simms and Wanda Sparks, both of Maysville; and five grandchildren.

Ruby Lynn Wheeler, 44, of Sciotoville, Ohio, died Monday at Greenbriar Nursing Home, Wheelersburg, Ohio after an extended illness. She was a nurse's aide.
Survivors include her father, Arthur Murphy of Corinth; brothers, Robert Lee Murphy of Hephzibah, Ga., and Danny Ray Murphy of Sciotoville; sisters, Edith Taylor of Williamstown, Ora Lee Lykins of Hephzibah, Juanita Bravo of Minford, Ohio, and Barbara Ann Lee of Sciotoville.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Corinth.
