Roy Charles Heringer, owned Newport cafe in '50s
Fifty years ago if you wanted to grab a sandwich in Newport, there's a good chance you would have stopped at Heringer's Cafe.
The Heringer's Cafe at Tenth and Saratoga in Newport was owned and operated in the early 195 0s by Roy Charles Heringer.
Mr. Heringer had lived in California since 1954, when the West Coast lured him away from his Newport restaurant business.
He died Friday at age 79 at Kaiser Hospital, Hollywood, Cali f., near his home in Westminster, Calif.
"He went out to California in 1954 on a combination business trip and vacation, and he said, 'If I find a job, I'm going to stay.' Well, he did, and he's been out there ever since," said his brother, Jake Heringer, from his Cold Spring home.
In California, Mr. Heringer worked as an electrician until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha Catherine Cottman Heringer; sons, Edward Heringer of Beaverton, Ore., and Daniel Heringer of Irvine, Calif.; brother, Jack "Jake" Heringer of Cold Spring; a sister, Virginia Scherling of Fort Thomas; nine grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.
Memorials are suggested to The Point, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011; Madonna House of Northern Kentucky, 25 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Virginia M. Carr, 75, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Raleigh Feltner, 57, of Pendleton County, died Wednesday at his residence.
Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Mary E. Githerman, 75, of Carrollton, died Monday at Carroll County Memorial Hosp ital in Carrollton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Carrollton First Baptist Church and the Carrollton Rebekah Lodge.
Her husband, Warren Githerman, died in 1984.
Survivors include a son, Col. Larry Githerman of Fort Riley, Kan.; a sister, Burnetta Wade of Carrollton; a brother, David Wade of Carrollton; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in IOOF Carrollton.
Margaret Hawley, 96, formerly of Ludlow, died Thursday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital in Cincinnati.

Mabel L. Kreutz Lubbe, 98, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright.
Her husband, Walter J. Lubbe, and a son, James Lubbe, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Victor Lubbe of Covington; a daughter, Norma Mersch of Bridgetown, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

She was a retire d cook with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Her husband, Rev. Ed Mayes; a daughter, Judy Mayes; and sons, Leo Mayes, Douglas Mayes, Alfred Mayes, John C. Mayes and Larry Dale Mayes, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Donnie Mayes of Alexandria; daughters, Georgia Bishop of Highland Heights, Sarah Goad of Grants Lick, Lucy Brown of Florence, Anna Fultz of Morning View and Joan Dailey of Michigan; brothers, Lester Peters of Bright, Ind., and Sammy Peters of Booneville; sisters, Virginia Turner of Newport and Ellen Short of Elsmere; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Macedonia Baptist Church, Newport.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.

Ted Theo Meadows, 63, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Norton's Hospice, Louisville.
He was a retired Army and Kentucky National Guard veteran.
Survivors include cousins.

Ruth F. Bowman Wallace, 79, of Cincinnati, formerly of Bellevue, died Wednesday at Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a secretary with Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Cincinnati, a member of the church, and a member of the Colerain Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Cincinnati.
Her husband, Emery Wallace, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Dan iel Wallace and Thomas Wallace, both of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Fri day at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
