Hot-air ballooning buoyed Mildred Brell of Maysville
Mildred Rose Voet Brell, a hot-air ballooning enthusiast who ran a Maysville funeral home with her husband for almost 40 years, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center.
She was 75.
Hot-air ballooning was something Mrs. Brell always wanted to try, said her youngest daughter, Colleta Hamilton of Maysville. When one of Mrs. Brell's daughters started dating a man who had a balloon, she got her opportunity.
"She was pretty much addicted after that," Ms. Hamilton said.
Mrs. Brell filled her home with hot-air balloon collectibles. She wore hot-air balloon T-shirts and had enough hot-air balloon Christmas ornaments to decorate an entire tree.
She took rides in her son-in-law's balloon up until a few years ago, her daughter said.
Born in Dayton and raised in Bellevue, Mrs. Brell moved with her husband to Maysville in 1961 to open Brell and Son Funeral Home. She spent much of her time there, answering phones and helping with the operation of the company.
When her husband, James Andrew Brell, died in 1997, she took over as full owner.
Mrs. Brell also raised seven children while helping run the family business. And she stayed active in the community, Ms. Hamilton said.
Mrs. Brell was a Girl Scout as a youth and continued to be involved with the organization as a leader. With six daughters, she ended up working with the Girl Scouts for 40 years, Ms. Hamilton said.
She was also a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville; Business and Professional Women's Club, Maysville; Outgoing Working Ladies Club, Maysville; Mason County Homemakers; Kentucky Central National Historical Society; and Aberdeen, Ohio, Lions Club. She was a former secretary of the Newport Merchants Association, while her husband worked at the Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home there.
