Irene Cable, loved family, church

Irene L. Cable was a mother and homemaker who set a high standard for her four daughters.

"She just always put her kids first, and that's why I as a mother do the same thing," said daughter Terrene Dillon of Florence.

Mrs. Cable, 75, of Burlington, died Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. Her husband, Gordon Cable, died last October.

Mrs. Cable grew up in the Cincinnati suburb of North College Hill.

When she married and set up housekeeping, "she just had to have everything perfect and spotlessly clean in her home," Mrs. Dillon said.

She said her mother lavished the same kind of attention on her daughters.

"We were so active," said Mrs. Dillon. "We were all cheerleaders and everything. She worked hard making sure our outfits were clean and everything was ready for us."

But Mrs. Cable could play as hard as she worked. She was always the first on the dance floor at a wedding reception and the last to leave, her daughter said.

Mrs. Dillon said she, her daughter and a niece also love to dance and tell each other: "We've got Grandma's genes."

Mrs. Cable was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Burlington. She was "very religious," her daughter said.

Other survivors include daughters, Debby Coppage of Independence and Kim Cable of San Diego; a brother, Anthony Gaspar of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Baseball was in the blood of Blanche L. "Dood" Marsh.

Mrs. Marsh was the mother of National League umpire Randy Marsh. She also worked side-by-side with her husband, Robert R. Marsh, leading the Kenton County Knothole Baseball program in the late 1950s and 1960s. Her husband was supervisor of the program.

"My mother helped him form the schedules. She worked the concession stand. I remember Mom at the kitchen table for all hours in the night working on Knothole," said daughter Candice Dee Bruns of Greenwood, Ind.

Mrs. Marsh, 70, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at her home in Taylor Mill.

The Marshes started an umpires' school to train high school students to umpire Knothole games. One of the young students was their son, Randy, who now lives in Edgewood.

In 1968, the Marshes bought Bob Marsh Modern Market at 15th and Greenup streets in Covington, and Mrs. Marsh worked at the grocery - again a key part of the family effort. The couple sold the market in 1978 after a robbery.

"My mother was really good at anything she did," Mrs. Bruns said. "She just liked people. She loved to be with family and friends."
