Bonnie Halfhill, war volunteer, loving mom

Bonnie Halfhill was a patriotic woman, a devoted mother and a kind church member.

Mrs. Halfhill volunteered with the American Red Cross during World War II and was a civil defense air-raid warden, which meant she helped coordinate drills for Covington residents to turn off their lights at night.

Mrs. Halfhill was also an administrator of the Red Cross emergency food-feeding department in Latonia and Rosedale that was used during World War II and other emergencies, such as flooding.

A son, Randall W. Halfhill of Florence, was a teen-ager and helped his mother during many of her nightly trips to help her neighbors during the war.

"Mother would give you the shirt off her back. She would do anything for you," Mr. Halfhill said.

Mrs. Halfhill, 87, of Latonia, died at 10:32 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Latonia Christian Church.

She was a Sunday school and primary school teacher with Latonia Christian Church and was a founder of the Ryland Heights Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a member of the Ryland Heights Homemakers Club, a past president of the state Parent Teacher Association and PTAs at Ninth District, Visalia and Simon Kenton schools. Her husband, Harold J. Halfhill, died in 1982.

Mrs. Halfhill was a Covington native who was very protective of her family. She was a soft-spoken woman who would speak her mind when she had to, her son said.

But she was also a kind woman who fed church members and evangelists who were hungry, her son said.

"I was proud of my mother then," Mr. Halfhill said. "And I'm proud of her now."

Mrs. Halfhill is also survived by another son, H. Dennis Halfhill of Fort Wright; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. George A. Ahrens, 75, of Highland Heights, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired claims division superintendent with State Farm Insurance Co.

Survivors include his wife, Amber Ahrens; a stepson, Andrew Marsh of Highland Heights; a stepdaughter, Erin Marsh of Birmingham, Ala.; daughters, Cynthia Winderl and Marcia White, both of Reidsville, N.C.; a brother, James Ahrens of Highland Heights; a sister, Dorothy Messick of Cincinnati; and three grandsons.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Gladys Clark, 94, of Latonia, died at 2:55 a.m. Monday at Baptist Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Harry Willis Clark, died in 1954.

Survivors include a sister, Edith Doherty of Latonia; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Sarah Evelyn Cummins, 82, of Butler, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Tho mas. She was a homemaker and a member of Grants Lick Baptist Church. Her husband, Winton L. "Sam" Cummins, died in 1974. A son, John William Dozier, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Stanley Dozier of California, Atton Cummins of Burlington and Charles Cummins of Falmouth; daughters, Jessie White of Peach Grove, Patsy Jackson of Butler and Marion Jackson of Cold Spring; brothers, Claude Stratton of Blue Ridge, Ga., and John Howard Stratton of Berlin; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Kenneth Ray England, 72, of Covington, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired owner of England Kennels in Covington, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Ruth England; a sister, Eunice Merschon of Independence; and brothers, Floyd England of Covington and Gaylen England of the state of California.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Erlanger Baptist Church, 116 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Naomi Frakes, 81, of Taylor Mill, died this morning at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Rev. Howard W. Harris, 75, of Gaffney, S.C., died Monday at Mary Black Hospital in Gaffney. He was a retired minister with several churches in Wisconsin and the former pastor of Gaffney Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a member of Church of the Living God, Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Marcella Stein Harris; sons, Perry Harris of Tucson, Ariz., Chris Harris of Blacksburg, S.C., Howard Wayne Harris of Spartanburg, S.C., Jewels Harris of Cowpens, S.C., Rev. Jesse D. Harris of Covington, and Rev. Shane Harris and Michael Wolf, both of Gaffney; daughters, Shawn Wolf of Rock Hill, S.C., and Hope Harris of Gaffney; brothers, Gene Harris of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Dennis Harris of Cherokee Falls, S.C.; sisters, Joyce Vance of Sacramento, Calif., and Shirley Childers of York, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Duncan Church of God, Duncan, S.C. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at White Columns Funeral Home, Blacksburg, S.C. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Blacksburg. Memorials are suggested to Church of the Living God Building Fund, 1279 Parkway Ave., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Joyce Lee Hinken, 64, of Erlanger, died at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a receptionist with Dr. Michael Cahill's office in Erlanger.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald K. Hinken; sons, Glenn Hinken of Burlington and John C. Hinken of Erlanger; daughters, Pamala M. Fitzpatrick of Edgewood and Mary Beth Groneck of Erlanger; a brother, Thomas Kingcade of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Doris "Cookie" Timmerding of Taylor Mill; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042.

William "Billy" Hinkston, 82, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical North in Covington. He was a general laborer and construction worker.

Survivors include sons, William Miller, Frank Hinkston, Bruce Hinkston, Jerry Hinkston and Jeff Hinkston; sisters, Nannie Mae Hinkston and Delphi Hinkston; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 tonight at United Community Christian Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Clydia Jane Parker Kurtz, 54, of Brooksville, died Monday at Meadowview Regional Med ical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of Brooksville Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harry R. Kurtz; a daughter, Cheri Heater of Augusta; a son, Mickey Kurtz of Brooksville; a sister, Mary E. Hall of Lenoxburg; and one grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at cemetery Chapel Christian Church, Lenoxburg. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Foster. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Katherine Rosella Kleiner Macke, 85, of Newport, died at 8:05 p.m. Monday at St. Luk e Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent DePaul Altar Society, the Hilltoppers and Auxiliary Knights of St. John at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Macke; daughters, Kathleen Brown of Covington, Sister Gladys Macke of New York, Lorraine Macke of Lexington, Margaret Fay of Naperville, Ill., Rosemary Nezi of Alexandria and Joan Macke of Newport; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Stoy Maiden, 89, of English, died at 3:41 a.m. Tuesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Highways and a Carroll County Road Department supervisor. Mr. Maiden was a member of English Christian Church and Carrollton Masonic Lodge No. 134.

Survivors include his wife, Dora Patton Maiden; a son, Richard Pat Maiden of Glencoe; a brother, Willis Maiden of Carrollton; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in English Cemetery.

Ruby Lawrence Meeks, 81, of Midway, formerly of Corinth, died Monday at Woodford County Hospital, Versailles. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence Meeks, and son, Tom Meeks, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Melba Woodrum of Frankfort; brothers, Blaine Lawrence of Cincinnati and Duard Lawrence of Louisiana; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Rita Sue "Susie" Roa, 53, of Crescent Springs, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Roa; daughters, Kristy Rardin of Bellevue, Aimee Roa of Dayton, Kelly Utz of Southgate and Tammy Wheaton-Fox of Augusta; sons, Daniel Roa of Crescent Springs and Michael Roa of Cincinnati; her mother, Lois O'Connor of Norwood, Ohio; a sister, Nelda Lomboy of Norwood, Ohio; a brother, William Wheaton of Newlum, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Edythe Wilson Slack, 73, of Maysville, died at 10:17 p.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of Highland Christian Church, Maysville. Her husband, Howard Slack, died in 1978. Sons, Larry Slack and Joe Wilson Slack, died in 1990 and 1999, respectively.

Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Slack Mullikin of Germantown; a brother, Howard Wilson of Maysville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Charleston Bottoms Cemetery, Dover. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219; Hospice of Hope, 1 W. Margaret Stratman, 84, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Her husband, James Stratman, died in 1979. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church, 318 Division St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.
