Master gardener William Mertes, cathedral's Parishioner of Year
William J. Mertes was a devoted church member in Covington who was named the Cathedral Basilica Parishioner of the Year in 1998.
Mr. Mertes designed gardens at the cathedral in Covington and took classes after his retirement to improve his knowledge of plants. He installed stained-glass artwork at various churches and halls in Covington and enjoyed helping friends and family alike.
"He was very outgoing," said his wife of 20 years, Patricia Mertes. "He didn't know what the word stranger meant."
Mr. Mertes, 72, of Covington, died at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 27 at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
He was a retired newspaper carrier with The Cincinnati Post and The Kentucky Post and was a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington. He was in charge of the Cathedral Garden Guild and was a member of Cincinnati Master Gardeners.
Mr. Mertes served as an usher and greeter with the cathedral and with the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Mertes had the same name as an unrelated Catholic priest in Northern Kentucky. Mrs. Mertes said the two were friends and her husband often received phone calls intended for Father Mertes.
"And Father Mertes often received calls from people who did not get their paper," Mrs. Mertes said.
Mr. Mertes is also survived by a stepdaughter, Nancy Anderson of Ludlow; and sisters, Jean Eisenman and JoAnn Metzger of Fort Wright, and Marian Winters of Ludlow.
Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.
Mr. Mertes bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Entombment of the remains will be in Spring Grove Mausoleum, Cincinnati.

Michael P. McSwigan spent most of his career teaching adults mathematics at the University of Cincinnati.
During the past three years, he came full-circle with his teaching career by being a volunteer reader at St. Agnes School in Park Hills.
Mr. McSwigan began volunteering at the elementary school in 1997, reading at the class of a grandson, Del Meadows, then for granddaughter Ashton Meadows' class.
He soon became a favorite of the children, who began calling him Granpa Mike, said his wife, Hope McSwigan.
"He loved the kids at St. Agnes. He thought they were just wonderful," Mrs. McSwigan said.
"Even when he was bedridden, he wanted to go and read to the children. I think he got more out of the reading sessions than they did."
Mr. McSwigan, 61, of Park Hills, died of cancer Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He was an associate professor of mathematics and former assistant dean of the University College at the University of Cincinnati. During his tenure as assistant dean, he oversaw the renovation of French Hall. He began his teaching career at Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School.
"Michael was just a wonderful person. He never had anything bad to say about anyone. He always found the positive about everyone," Mrs. McSwigan said.
Mr. McSwigan was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Other survivors include sons, Paul McSwigan of Cincinnati and David McSwigan of New York; a daughter, Anne Marie McSwigan of Cincinnati; a stepson, John Earls of Norwalk, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Mary E. Meadows of Park Hills; brothers, James McSwigan of West Palm Beach, Fla., Charles McSwigan of Cincinnati and John McSwigan of Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Mr. McSwigan bequeathed his body to the University of Kentucky Medical School.

Pearl C. Brancamp Bartelsman, 86, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Harry W. Bartelsman; and a daughter, Nancy B. Turner of Florence.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.
Adam Burton, 74, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Frank Catterton, 65, of Newport, died Jan. 26 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a driver with Newport Yellow Cab Co.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Catterton; sons, Frank Catterton Jr. of Newport, Danny Catterton and Nick Catterton, both of Clover, S.C.; daughters, Sherry Ostwalt and Terrie Robinson, both of Clover; stepsons, David Robinson of Covington, Michael Stratton of Butler and Robert Stratton of Florence; stepdaughters, Jennifer Jacobs of Newport, Angie Megerle and Patricia Howard, both of Covington, and Kathy Winkle of Butler; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at TLC Burial and Cremation Service, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
Naomi Wasser Frakes, 81, of Taylor Mill, died Wednesday at her home. She was a retired service clerk with Western Union in Cincinnati, and a former member of Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a member of Hilltop Church of Christ, Taylor Mill. Her husband, Charles Frakes, died in 1988.
Survivors include sons, George L. Frakes of Edgewood and Tommy W. Frakes of Covington; a sister, Martha Degenhart of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Gilbert Goins, 80, of Crittenden, died Monday at his home. He was a millwright with Erlanger Lumber Co.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Goins; a son, Ronald Lee Goins of Crittenden; a daughter, Denise Faye Dedden of Florence; a brother, Edward Goins of Lancaster; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ralph W. "Buck" Jones, 79, of Deer Park, Ohio, formerly of Corinth, died Wednesday at East Galbraith Health Care Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired driver with Interstate Trucking Co.

Jane Kathryn McKibben, 93, of Brooksville, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospice Unit, Lexington. She was an employee of Bracken County Schools and a member of Powersville Baptist Church.
Her husband, Adrian McKibben, died in 1948. Daughters, Ruth Tatman and Naomi Galloway; and sons, Robert McKibben and Harold McKibben, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Doris Yeh of Savannah, Ga., and Linda Whitt of Lexington; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dorothy T. Mefford, 91, of Ghent, died Tuesday at Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, Carrollton. She was a homemaker, a tobacco farmer and a member of Ghent Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Anna Catherine Wheeler of Ghent; a son, T. W. Mefford of Carrollton; a sister, Lula Cain of Carrollton; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Caroline R. Oldendick, 80, of Crescent Springs, died at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Harry Oldendick, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Harry M. Oldendick of Crescent Springs; daughters, Sandra Oldendick and Karen Oldendick, both of Crescent Springs; and two grandchildren.

Ora Blanche Redmon, 95, of Batavia, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died at 4:14 a.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Manor and Convalescent Center in Batavia. She was a retired secretary with Frederick Garber Architects, Cincinnati, and a member of Church of Christ of Batavia.
Survivors include one great-nephew, Martin Redmon of Jacksonville, Fla., and one great-niece, Katherine Wiggans of Atherton, Calif.

Helen Scott, 81, of Cincinnati, formerly of Dayton, died Tuesday at Communicare of Clifton nursing home in Cincinnati. She was a book binder with American Book Co. Her husband, Chester Scott, died in 1985.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosalee Weik of Hamilton, Ohio; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Herbert Cull Wainscott, 93, of Owenton, died Monday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Greenup Fork Baptist Church. His wife, Minerva Chapman Wainscott; and daughters, Birdie Wainscott, Gertie Wainscott and Nancy Beck; and sons, Herbert Wainscott Jr., Herbert B. Wainscott and Daniel Wainscott, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Florence Scott Popp of New Albany, Ind., Mary Keefe of Louisville, Emma McFarland of Bowling Green, Alice Staser of Lexington, Ind., and Alma Perkins, Ruby Ellis and Ann Wainscott, all of Owenton; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Ernest Williams, 80, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a retired carpenter.
