Richard A. 'Dick' Ducker, a 'cutup' who 'made things fun'
Richard A. "Dick" Ducker, had a knack for making people feel special. As a nursing home volunteer he coaxed smiles from residents and staff with good-humored teasing and impromptu pizza parties, said his friend, Ethel Fahey.
Mr. Ducker died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 94.
He was a retired shipping clerk for Gibson-Perin office supply company in Cincinnati and an Army veteran of World War II.
He and his wife, Marguerite, lived in Fort Thomas. After retirement, they moved to the Hathaway Court senior-citizen apartments in West Covington, where they became neighbors with their longtime friends, Ethel and Bill Fahey. The two couples traveled together through Ludlow Senior Citizens and spent holidays together.
"He was a wonderful person," said Mrs. Fahey. "He was a cutup. He always made things fun."
When his wife became ill and moved to the Baptist Convalescent Center, Mr. Ducker started volunteering at the center. He continued to volunteer after she died in 1987, building close ties with staff and residents.
"He took the patients to therapy," Mrs. Fahey said. "All the girls in therapy loved him. Sometimes he'd have pizza brought in."
He put in more than 2,700 volunteer hours at the Baptist Convalescent Center.
About 12 years ago he converted to Catholicism, and Mrs. Fahey became his godmother.
"He told me he was never so happy in his life," she said.
He was a member of St. Ann Church in Covington.
His health had started to fail in recent years, and a few months ago he moved to the Baptist Convalescent Center as a resident.
