Gene Schulkers, union president

Gene Schulkers of Fort Thomas was generous with his time, doting on his family, serving as union president for fellow workers at the Cincinnati Enquirer and volunteering as an exercise instructor at the Campbell County YMCA.

But the 50-year-old Mr. Schulkers did not ask much from others.

So when he fell ill Wednesday evening after arriving at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas for choir practice, he quietly dialed 911 for help.

Mr. Schulkers was taken to St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas and then transferred to University Hospital in Cincinnati, where he died of a brain aneurysm Thursday night.

Today, Mr. Schulkers and his wife, Mary Schulkers, would have celebrated 30 years of marriage.

"He was very outgoing. He loved people. He loved being with people," said Mrs. Schulkers.

"The minute he met you, you felt like he was your best friend.

"He loved his kids and his grandchildren dearly. He was very proud of them all."

Mr. Schulkers was born and reared in Dayton. He worked in production at the Cincinnati Enquirer for 26 years.

At the time of his death, Mr. Schulkers was president of the Teamsters Local 1717 Mailers Union.

Vice president Jim Ruth knew Mr. Schulkers 25 years.

"He was a leader that you could depend on," Mr. Ruth said.

"He was also a friend."

In addition, Mr. Schulkers was active with the Teamsters Joint Council No. 26. He was assistant to the president, recording secretary and co-chair of the group's Political Action Committee.

"He was a friend and a very active labor leader," said Roger Insprucker, president of the joint council.
