Robert Lucas craved work, travel
Robert and Jane Lucas of Cynthiana worked and played together for nearly 58 years.
Mr. Lucas - the only brother of U.S. Rep. Kenneth Lucas, a Democrat from Richwood - operated his own business, Lucas Waterproofing. His steady hand - his wife - was the company bookkeeper.
After the Lucases retired, they joined an Airstream trailer club and traveled to places like Bismarck, N.D., Mount Rushmore in Keystone, S.D. and Canada.
"It was lots of fun. We just had a good life," said Mrs. Lucas. The couple was married
57 years and would have celebrated another anniversary on Monday.
Mr. Lucas died Wednesday at his home at age 82.
Mr. Lucas was born in Dry Ridge. His family moved to Fort Mitchell while he was in high school.
Mr. Lucas was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked for a sandblasting and painting business, but quit the job after narrowly escaping death when a bridge he was working on in West Virginia collapsed.
Mr. Lucas then founded Lucas Waterproofing. He won contracts to waterproof a number of state buildings in Lexington.
He also waterproofed basements in private homes.
Later in his career, Mr. Lucas also renovated homes.
He was a past president of the board that oversees the Harrison County Airport in Cynthiana.
And, Mr. Lucas was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cynthiana.
Mrs. Lucas enjoyed being a bookkeeper, but told her husband she didn't want to do it forever. "I told him that when I was 65, I'm retiring. And he said, 'I don't want to retire.'
"And I said, 'Well, if you don't retire, you're going to have to get a bookkeeper because I'm through'," Mrs. Lucas told him.
So the couple retired about 20 years ago.
That's when they joined the Wally Byram Airstream Club's Kentucky unit.
The Lucases were active in committees that planned local, national and international conferences.
Mrs. Lucas treasured the time with her husband as much as the travel.
"He was very pleasant to live with," she said.
