'Jack' Lukens won awards for art
John Byron "Jack" Lukens worked for many years as a stock clerk in Cincinnati. But he always felt his true calling was to be an artist.
Mr. Lukens, who lived in Dayton, was born in Hillsboro, Ohio, and studied art at Ohio State University. He won several awards at the university for his oil paintings and met his future wife, Glennibel Lukens, at Ohio State.
The Lukens married
soon after they met, which required Mr. Lukens to work full-time to support his family.
Still, Mr. Lukens painted whenever he could.
"He painted portraits of his parents and of his children," said a daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Watkins of Washington Court House, Ohio.
"I think of him as being a big, gentle, man. His family was No. 1 with him."
Mr. Lukens, 84, of Dayton, died Saturday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. He was a stock clerk with R. K. LeBlond Co. in Cincinnati.
His wife and a son, Tom Lukens, preceded him in death.
Mr. Lukens played football while he was in high school and developed an appreciation for animals and nature because his father, William Lukens, was a veterinarian in Hillsboro.
Mr. Lukens moved to Dayton in 1947 and lived there for the remainder of his life.
Mr. Lukens was a religious man who enjoyed being with his family, Mrs. Watkins said.
"He was very soft-spoken. I don't think he ever whipped any of us," Mrs. Watkins said.
Another daughter, Gloria Herms, of California, wrote a tribute to her father that reminisced about picnics and other outings he planned for his family.
Mrs. Herms said her father often fed the hungry and gave shelter to homeless people.
"He shopped every Saturday, bringing home what seemed like endless bags of food piled on the tables and chairs. Snacks were divided for all. Even the neighbors were included," Mrs. Herms wrote.
Mr. Lukens is also survived by daughters, Catherine Drews and Theresa Lightfoot, both of Taylor Mill, Rita Hopper of Hamilton, Ohio, Helen Kava of Cincinnati, Rosemary Menetrey of Fort Thomas, Lucy Turner of Dayton, and Ann Wood of Wheaton, Ill.; a son, Joe Lukens of Lakeside Park; a sister, Jane Bowman of Venice, Fla.; two brothers, Bill Lukens of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Ted Lukens of Cincinnati; 31 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
