James M. Dragoo Sr.: Always ready to help
To James M. Dragoo Sr., compassion and concern for others - both on the job and in his personal life - were important qualities.
Mr. Dragoo was in the carbon-paper business, starting as a foreman at Interchemical in Cincinnati in 1931. In the 1950s, he left Interchemical to be plant manager at Carbon Web Corp. in Florence.
United Technologies bought Carbon Web in the 1960s, and Mr. Dragoo retired as plant manager in 1969.
Mr. Dragoo incorporated compassion and a genuine concern for employees in his management style, his relatives said.
"If someone had a problem, he'd go all out to help them," said his son, James Dragoo Jr. of Fort Thomas.
Mr. Dragoo, 92, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Mr. Dragoo's motto was drawn from a favorite hymn, his son said: "Help somebody today."
"Dad was a person who loved to help anybody. When he was 75 or 80, he'd get groceries for neighbors who couldn't get out."
Mr. Dragoo was a former member of the Optimists Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Retired Men's Club of Fort Thomas. He was active in Southgate United Methodist Church, where he and his wife, Gladys, had been members for 65 years. He also was involved in the interfaith movement.
"He went to the waterworks for years and got the names of new people who had moved in," said his son. Mr. Dragoo would distribute the names to churches so ministers could welcome the new residents.
He grew lush gardens with vegetables and flowers in his Fort Thomas yard. Roses were a specialty, tended with pride, his son said.
He and his wife had recently moved into the Highlands of Fort Thomas care center.
