Verona's Luther Risner, helped Big Bone Lick State Park grow

Luther Risner, of Verona, a former park manager who took Big Bone Lick State Park from a picnic area to what it is today, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was 91.

Mr. Risner had retired as an expediter from Avco Financial Services and was farming when he was asked to be a manager for the park. When he started working there, there were just a few picnic tables, said his daughter, Lucille Maddox of Verona.

But her father took charge and was responsible for construction of the new office building, a swimming pool and campground. He also helped gain funding to buy surrounding acreage to expand the park.

"He didn't mind going to Frankfort and saying 'I need such and such,' " Ms. Maddox said.

Mr. Risner had several careers before the state park. A native of Morgan County, Mr. Risner later moved to Perry County where he taught school in a one-room school house. It was there that he owned and operated the Risner and Dunn General Store with his wife, Cassie Dunn Risner, who preceded him in death.
