Lucy Brandenburg, loved outdoors
Lucy Seale Brandenburg could do anything, said her daughter-in-law, Nancy Helton.
She canned her own foods, made her husband's T-shirts and was strong enough at 84 to draw a bucket of well water by herself. And the Booneville, Ky., native knew almost everything about Kentucky history, Mrs. Helton said.
"A world of knowledge died when she died," Mrs. Helton said.
Mrs. Brandenburg, of Taylor Mill, died early Tuesday morning at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker, a member of the Boone County Quilting Club and a former member of the Boone County Homemakers. She was 84.
Mrs. Branden lived on and took care of 38 acres in Constance on Ky. 8 for more than 50 years. She laughed at her son and daughter-in-law for stockpiling food and water in case of Y2K problems.
"She thought we were so stupid," Mrs. Helton said, laughing.
Mrs. Bradenburg had a love of the outdoors and a love for white cats. She liked to sit by a creek and read or just do anything outside. Even when she got sick she would sit in the yard and pull weeds, Mrs. Helton said.
"It didn't take much to make her happy...as long as she had her cats and the outdoors," Mrs. Helton said.
Mrs. Brandenburg's husband, Wallace P. "Red" Brandenburg, died in 1980. A son, Carl Edward Brandenburg, also preceded her in death.
Other survivors include a son, Don Helton of Taylor Mill; a sister, Ruth Best of Beavercreek, Ohio; a brother, Ed Seale of Somerset; one grandson; and one great-grandchild.

Ervin J. Nutter, funded UK professorships, facilities
Businessman-philanthropist Ervin J. Nutter, who donated $3.5 million to establish professorships and building athletic facilities at the University of Kentucky, died at his home Wednesday after a long illness.
He was 85.
Nutter had suffered heart problems that led to a series of strokes, said his son, Bob.
"He'd had good recovery from the last stroke," his son said. "He'd been home since early December and was up and talking, so this was rather sudden."
Funeral services will be private.
Nutter, a mechanical engineer, founded Elano Corp. in Xenia, Ohio, about 15 miles east of Dayton. In 1985, he sold his interest in the company, which fabricates metal parts for jet airplanes.
A University of Kentucky alumnus, Nutter is a member of the university's Hall of Distinguished Alumni. He and his wife, Zoe, donated $1 million to establish professorships in mechanical engineering, $1 million to help build the E.J. Nutter Football Training Facility and $1.5 million for the Nutter Field House.
"It's fair to say that the University of Kentucky just lost one of the best friends we ever had," associate athletics director Kathy DeBoer said.
"Erv loved us, supported us and gave to us generously, yet he was always challenging us to be better," she said. "He believed in education and felt a strong athletics program was a good recruiting tool for a university."
In July, the Nutters donated $1 million to help build a learning and research center at the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton.
They also had donated $1.3 million for the Miami Valley Prep School Science Center. He had served on the board of trustees for Wright State in Dayton, Ohio, and he donated more than $1.5 million to build the sports and entertainment hall that opened there in 1990.
