Raymond Vincent, city attorney in Florence for two decades
Over the quarter of a century he served as Florence's city attorney, Raymond Vincent saw the landscape and character of the city change drastically.
Florence was a community of about 3,500 when Mr. Vincent came on as the city attorney in the late '50s. He helped it become the commercial center it is today, former Mayor C.M. "Hop" Ewing said.
Mr. Vincent guided and counseled the city's leaders through establishing the water-sewer commission, building proper concrete streets and building the Florence Mall, he said.
"As far as I'm concerned he's one of the stalwarts of getting the city started," said Ewing, who served as mayor from 1960-1981.
Mr. Vincent was city attorney throughout Ewing's term and stayed on a few years after him.
"He was very dedicated to the city," Ewing said. "He was always honest and he treated the city right."
Mr. Vincent, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at Wesley Hall Nursing Home in Cincinnati. He was a member of Florence Baptist Church. His wife, Geraldine Vincent, died in 1974.
"I had a lot of respect for Ray Vincent and I think he did a tremendous job," said Ewing. Mr. Vincent had previously lived in Dry Ridge.

William Macklin Jr., chairman of old Booth hospital
William R. Macklin Jr. of Park Hills committed himself to many civic endeavors, including serving as chairman of the old Booth Memorial Hospital board, but his greatest love was his family.
Mr. Macklin, 76, died Thursday at the Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash, Ohio.
Mr. Macklin met the woman who would later become his wife at the John R. Coppin Co. - at one time the largest department store in Northern Kentucky. Mr. Macklin's family owned the company, and Evelyn "Judy" Ellis was working at the store.
They married
in 1949 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October.
"He was loving," his wife said. "He was kind. He had a marvelous sense of humor.
"People would say he always had dignity."
Most of Mr. Macklin's career was spent in retailing. He became vice president of the Coppin department store after his father died. He also worked for seven or eight years for the state of Kentucky in the Division of Medical Assistance-Pharmacy Department, before retiring in his 60s.
Mr. Macklin had polio when he was 24 years old, which created some difficulty in walking. In later years heart disease and diabetes forced him into a wheelchair.
Still, he enjoyed going out to lunch with his family, attending some social functions and reading, his wife said.
He served as past president of the Covington Retail Merchants Associa tion, past member and chairman of the Beechwood Board of Education, past chairman of the Booth Hospital advisory board, past member and 1957 Young Man of the Year of the Covington-Kenton County Chamber of Commerce, past vice president of the Richard P.
