Mary Jane Rankin 'loving, kind'
Mary Jane Rankin, who helped lead ministry and outreach efforts in Warsaw Christian Church, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West.
She was 71.
Mrs. Rankin worked with the minister to start the church's food pantry for the poor in 1984 and helped re-establish the church's Christian Women's Fellowship in 1986.
She was the first female deacon in the church and the first female elder. This week, she was made elder emeritus at a ceremony at her bedside.
She was a longtime Sunday school teacher at Florence Christian Church and later at Warsaw Christian Church. She also was a member of Warsaw Women's Club.
Mrs. Rankin and her husband, the late James A. Rankin, raised their family in Erlanger.
They moved to a farm overlooking the river in Warsaw in the mid-1970s. Mrs. Rankin created a bird sanctuary on the property and raised several St. Bernard dogs.
Mrs. Rankin felt called by God to help make the world a better place, said her daughter, Sally Haddix of Warsaw.
"She was loving and patient and kind," Mrs. Haddix said.
"She took in stray dogs and cats. If little birds or squirrels were hurt, she would heal them."
For the past 13 years Mrs. Rankin had been ill with lung problems, including emphysema. In her Bible she wrote, "I resolve to love and serve others even while I am ill, because it gives life meaning for me."
She resolved to contact one person each day to spread Christian love, said her sister, Susan Rankin of Florence.
"She told me, 'Writing is something I can do,' and she would write notes to people or phone them."
Her husband, James A. Rankin, died in 1993.
She remained in the family home with help from family members and friends. Her daughter, Sally, lived with her.
"She was my best friend," her sister said. "I'd spend a couple days a week caring for her, and I was the luckier for it. We shared a lot."
