Edwin Arlinghaus, jet engine planner and family man
Edwin J. Arlinghaus had one daughter and five sons, but he was also a member of one of Northern Kentucky's largest extended families.
At a recent reunion, it was estimated that 400 to 500 people are in one way or another a part of the Arlinghaus family, said Mr. Arlinghaus's son, Edwin.
Mr. Arlinghaus, 78, of Villa Hills, died Saturday morning in St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a jet engine planner with General Electric in Cincinnati. Mr. Arlinghaus worked for the company for 32 years, and retired in 1983, his son said.
His father was an avid woodworker, turning out furniture in his home workshop, the younger Edwin Arlinghaus said. "Most of the furniture he made, he gave away. He seldom sold anything," Edwin Arlinghaus said.
"He made items for the family, including baby cribs. He made things for his church, some of which were sold at festivals for fund-raising."
Mr. Arlinghaus traveled some after his retirement, and he dabbled with golf, his son said, but he loved to play pool with friends. "He carried his own cue stick," Edwin Arlinghaus said.
Mr. Arlinghaus' first wife, Rose Mary Schweinefus Arlinghaus, died in 1980. His second wife, Lucille Emmons Arlinghaus, died in 1987. A son, Gary Lee Arlinghaus, died in 1958.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Gamm of Fort Mitchell; sons, Edwin J. Arlinghaus, Robert A. Arlinghaus and Richard P. Arlinghaus, all of Villa Hills, and William L. Arlinghaus of Union; brothers, Leo Arlinghaus of Villa Hills, Paul Arlinghaus of Erlanger, Robert Arlinghaus of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Richard Arlinghaus of Fort Wright, Joseph Arlinghaus of Cincinnati and Kenneth Arlinghaus of Fort Myers, Fla.; sisters, Martha Arlinghaus and Anna Mae Zerhusen, both of Fort Mitchell, and Betty Knasel of Edgewood; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Eloise E. Balz, 82, of Florence, died Saturday at her home. She retired after 43 years as school librarian with the Indian Hill, Ohio, Schools, and formerly worked in the Covington school system. She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park, and a former member and librarian with Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Lakeside Park, where she started the church's library. Ms. Balz also helped organize the New Beginnings Presbyterian Church in Erlanger.
Survivors include a brother, Charles R. Balz Sr. of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Viola Louise Foley, 75, of Florence, died at 7:46 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a retired printing press operator and a member of Latonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include sisters, Evelyn Thomas and Florabel Boedker, both of Florence, and Aleeta Laycock of Boise, Idaho; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Janet Gertrude Fredrick, 76, of Edgewood, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a homemaker, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and a volunteer with Catholic Social Services. Her husband, James L. Fredrick, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine Rottinghaus of Edgewood; a son, Anthony Fredrick of Las Vegas; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Mary Kathryn Goodrich, 73, of Owenton, died Friday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Owenton. Her husband, Richard "Joe" Goodrich, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Joe Goodrich of Owenton; daughters, Carol Saylor, Judy Estes, Debbie Perry and Paula Lilly, all of Owenton, and Barbara Cook of Jonesville; a brother, Paschal "Pete" Howell of Cincinnati; stepbrothers, Vernon Clifton and Lewis Clifton, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Naomi Williams of Owenton and Viola Winford of Covington; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Betty Kimmerle Green, 79, of Lexington, formerly of Covington, died Saturday in Lexington after an extended illness. She was a retired executive secretary for the director of public relations at the University of Kentucky, and a former editorial assistant with Farm Quarterly, F&W; Publishing Co. in Cincinnati. Her husband, Earl V. Green, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, James R. Green of Lexington, David A. Green of Tampa, Fla., and Ronald M. Green of Green Bay, Ala.; daughters, Kathy L. Green and Susan Green Birch, both of Lexington; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary M. McKnight, 70, of Elsmere, died Saturday at her home. She was a retired secretary with University of Cincinnati Alumni Association, and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Survivors include a daughter, Cathie K. Pike of Crittenden; sisters, Martha Jane Wolf of Elsmere and Ruth Dailey of Avondale, Va.; brothers, Alfred Mairose of Fort Mitchell, Joseph Mairose and James Mairose, both of Elsmere, and John Mairose of Erlanger; and three grandchildren.

Howard Richardson, 63, of Cold Spring, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a truck driver with CTI Trucking Co. and an Korean War Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Richardson; daughters, Scarlett Noel of Burlington and Shirley Richardson of Crescent Springs; a son, Howard G. Richardson of Newport; brothers, Kenneth Richardson of Covington, Raymond Richardson and William Richardson, both of Florida; sisters, Ruth Richardson of Bellevue, Janet Sanzenbacker of Fort Thomas and Mary Spradlin of Dayton; and three grandchildren.

Betty Jean Riggs, 67, of Newport, died Friday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Beck of Newport; a son, Robert Riggs of Silver Grove; a half-brothers, Jackie Howard of Cincinnati; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Gregory Alan Roberts, 43, of Crittenden, died at 5:35 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington, after suffering a stroke on Christmas Eve. He was a truck driver with C&D; Trucking Co. in Cincinnati, and was president of the Northern Kentucky Junior Pro Basketball Association.
Mr. Roberts was a former commissioner of the Taylor Mill Boosters basketball program, and volunteered for basketball programs at Scott High School and Woodland School. He was very active in youth sports programs in Northern Kentucky. His father, Harry R. Roberts, died in May 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Lynn Roberts; sons, Jimmy Roberts of Walton and Chad Roberts of Crittenden; his mother, Edna Chain of Florence; brothers, Jim Roberts of Covington, Steve Roberts of Houston and Darryl Roberts of Taylor Mill; sisters, Sue Golfman of Latonia, Shelia Kay Fisk of Butler and Pat "Toots" Wallace of California; a half-brother, Mike Eagle of Florence; stepbrothers, Todd Conrad of Marysville, Calif., and Paul Kidd of Lima, Ohio; a half-sister, Sherri Marksberry of Florence; and one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation is 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Charles J. Russell, 30, of Covington, died at 5:13 p.m. FridayJ7 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a waiter with Barleycorn's Restaurant in Newport.
Survivors include his parents, Rodman Jay Russell Jr. and Pamella Howell, both of Covington; and a sister, Michele Russell of Covington.

James Henry Rust, 65, of Camp Springs, died at 8:50 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a mechanic with Neltner Oil Co. in Newport, and a member of Northern Kentucky Saddle Club in Camp Springs and Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Stephen Court No. 1380, Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Rust; sons, Charles Rust and Paul Rust, both of Alexandria, James Rust of Butler, Edwin Rust of California and Christopher Rust of Fort Thomas; daughters, Jennifer Overstreet and Jane Yockey, both of Alexandria, and Laura Sauerbeck and Catherine DeMoss, both of Camp Springs; sisters, Jane Rust of Newport and Joan Batsche of Bellevue; 29 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Artie Belle Sauer, 72, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at Communicare of Clifton nursing home in Cincinnati. She was an office worker with the American Red Cross. Her husband, Russell Austin, and a son, Mark Austin, both preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Marcie Beischel of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Clarence F. Troutman, 79, of Williamsburg, Ohio, formerly of Newport, died Saturday at Drake Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired employee of Durkee-French Foods in Cincinnati. A son, Clarence Jacob Troutman, died in 1990.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian D. Stewart Troutman; stepsons, Phillip McMullen of Edenton, Ohio, William Ronald McMullen of Batavia, Ohio, Gary Thomas of Crescent Springs and Danny Thomas of Brooksville; a stepdaughter, Janet Goller of Dayton; 10 step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

Sylvia M. Weiler, 87, of Florence, died Friday at Baptist Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was an accountant, and a member of St. Paul Church in Florence, the church prayer group and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
