Joseph McNamara Jr., Mount Sterling lawyer
Having been born 15 minutes before her, Joseph Bernard McNamara Jr. was protective of his twin sister, Margaret McNamara.
"He always took up for me," she said. Being his twin "was wonderful."
"We had a lot in common," she said. "But I was the musician, and he was the lawyer."
Mr. McNamara of Dayton died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 79.
Mr. McNamara joined the Army shortly after graduation from college and spent World War II as a bombardier in the 15th Air Force in the European theater. When he came back, he went to law school at University of Kentucky and graduated in 1948.
"He was quite a man," said Margaret McNamara. "He served his country and was a good practicing lawyer for years."
Mr. McNamara practiced law in Mount Sterling and also in Midland, Texas. While living in Texas, he brushed elbows with three future presidents.
Mr. McNamara served as a state representative to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1956, where we was impressed by one speaker - John Kennedy. Mr. McNamara joined Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign early, serving as a local campaign manager in Midland, and also became familiar with Lyndon Johnson.
Years later, the law firm next door to Mr. McNamara's law offices in Midland had George Bush on its roster. The two men met, and became friends.
In 1993, Mr. McNamara suffered a stroke. Then, it was time for his sister to take care of him. Shortly after his stroke, Mr. McNamara moved to Dayton where his sister helped him with every-day things.
"He was an extraordinarily brilliant man and a loving man," Ms. McNamara said. "He was a pleasure to be around."
Other survivors include daughters, Margaret Ann Dunklee of Portland, Ore., and Catherine Werner of Austin, Texas; sons, Patrick McNamara of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Joseph B. McNamara III of Dallas; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial was this morning at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Burial was in St. Thomas Cemetery, Mount Sterling. Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard Church, Fifth and Berry, Dayton, Ky. 41074. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, handled arrangements.
Joseph L. Brown, 81, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown. He was a retired motel and restaurant operator in Williamstown and a member of Milford, Ohio, Lodge No. 54 F&AM. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Scottish Rite, a past potentate of the Syrian Shrine in Cincinnati, and a member of Mulberry, Ohio, Church of Christ. His wife, Helen Piles Brown, died in 1998.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Alley of Milford and Lynda McGaw of Kansas City, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Kenneth A. Bush, 79, of Latonia, died at 7:19 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia.
Myrtle L. Jaggers Carrell, 82, of Louisville, died Tuesday at University Hospital in Louisville of injuries suffered in a fall at her home on New Year's Day. She was a longtime volunteer with the old Methodist Evangelical Hospital in Louisville, a former Democratic precinct captain and a Girl Scout leader. Her husband, Archie V. Carrell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Michael R. Carrell of Crescent Springs; daughters, Mary Anne Ryan and Susan Lee Carrell, both of Louisville; brothers, James O. Jagger and Riley Jaggers, both of Hart County; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ratterman Funeral Home, Louisville. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Louisville. Sophie Clarkston Curtis, 84, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence. Her husband, Opa David Curtis, died in 1993.
Survivors include sisters, Myrtle Hurd of Cincinnati and June Wyatt of Greendale, Ind.; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Marvin W. Henry, 60, of Sherman, died at Wednesday at his home. He was a maintenance worker with Bluegrass Meats, Crescent Springs.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Cook Henry; sons, Allan W. Henry and Kenneth G. Henry, both of Crittenden, Mark W. Henry of Taylor Mill and Keith L. Henry of Williamstown; and a sister, Louise Bivens of Burlington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Evelyn Mae Stopplewerth Hill, 74, of Latonia, died at 1:39 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Dayton, where she was a worship leader. She was a former member of the old Grace United Church of Christ in Covington, where she was a choir member, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Women's Guild and a past president of the church council.
Survivors include her husband, Roland C. Hill of Covington; a son, James R. Hill of Latonia; and a sister, Mildred Stevenson of Glendale, Ariz.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. James Paul Mahoney Sr., 76, of Fort Mitchell, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. he was a retired supervisor with Conrail Railroad and a former owner of Crown Heating Co. in Fort Mitchell. His wife, Ruth Sallee Mahoney, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, James Paul Mahoney of Independence, Stephen Mahoney and David Mahoney, both of Fort Mitchell, Michael Mahoney of Elsmere and Charles Mahoney of Fort Thomas; daughters, Teresa Myers of Fort Wright and Mary Martha Deters of Edgewood; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Edward J. Meier, 87, of Fort Thomas, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. He was president of Prince Reproductions Inc., a past president and secretary-treasurer of the Kentucky Elks State Association, and a former exaulted ruler of Newport Elks Lodge 273. He was a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport and Bishop Mulloy Council Knight of Columbus.
His first wife, Helenanne Cole Meier, died in 1974. His second wife, Jean Kuntz Meier, died in 1981.
There are no immediate survivors.

Wanda Wainscott Newman, 54, of Lexington, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Lexmark in Lexington and a member of Bethel Assembly of God, Lexington.
Survivors include her husband, William Newman; stepsons, Timothy Newman of Nicholasville and Kevin Newman of Parkerburg, W.Va.; brothers, Kenneth Wainscott, Frankie Wainscott and Jerry Wainscott, all of Owenton, Jackie Wainscott of Geraldine, Ala., Bobby Wainscott of Frankfort and Darrell Wainscott of Cincinnati; sisters, Dorothy Jean Perkins and Viola Wainscott, both of Owenton, Joyce Covington of Sparta and Brenda Jones of Florence; nine step-grandchildren; and three god-children.

Rev. Caren "Karue" Noble, 69, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, Lexington. He was an ordained minister with the Sherman Full Gospel Church, a former pastor of the Cynthiana Full Gospel Tabernacle and a former evangelist with Verona Church of God. Rev. Noble was a former adult Sunday school teacher, a retired employee of the Ford Motor Co. and a Korean War veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Lee Thomas Noble; a son, Johnny Ray Noble of Cynthiana; a daughter, Carol Hott-Schleyer of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Lillian V. Davenport Renaker, 80, of Covington, died Tuesday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Bill Renaker, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Willie Hamad and Donna Bullock; a son, David O'Banion; a brother, Bobby Davenport; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ralph G. Schilling, 78, of Fort Thomas, died at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired mail carrier.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Wagner Schilling; daughters, Robbie Winstel of Alexandria, Roxanne Holthaus of Highland Heights, Becky Litmer of Cold Spring and Rhonda Reis of California; a son, Robert G. Schilling of Cold Spring; a brother, Richard J. Schilling of Villa Hills; and 11 grandchildren.

Helen R. Stanton Smith, 40, of Florence, died Tuesday at her home. She was a custodian with Community Pentecostal Church in Independence. A brother, James Stanton, died in 1996.
Survivors include her husband, Kelly R. Smith; a son, Eric Wayne Smith of Florence; a daughter, Amanda Nicole Smith of Florence; her father, Edgar Stanton of Florence; a brother, John Stanton of Texas; and a sister, Norma Sue Potter of Erlanger.

William Verlin Snipes Sr., 67, of Maysville, died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a mechanic. Two sons, Thomas Steven Snipes and Jay Edward Snipes; a daughter, Bonnie Lou Snipes; a sister, Edith Maxine Stevens; and two brothers, Billy Eugene Snipes and Dee Snipes, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, William Verlin Snipes Jr. of Milford, Ohio; daughters, Elva Moore of Tollesboro and Connie Sue Merrill of Cincinnati; brothers, Lee Snipes and Hobert Snipes, both of Morehead; and five grandchildren.

Larry Lee Wallace, 51, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at a friend's home in Butler. He was an employee of the Mubea Co. and was an Army veteran.
