Gertrude Dorothy Bush, devoted to family, work
Gertrude Dorothy Bush was known for her community spirit and hospitality.
Mrs. Bush lived in Fort Thomas most of her life and helped found the Fort Thomas Swim Club. She had been active in the Fort Thomas Women's Club, Homemakers Club and Highlands High School PTA.
During the 1960s, '70s and early '80s, she was a receptionist for Dr. John J. Finnegan, a dental surgeon, first in the Finnegan, Owens & Williams partnership in Covington and later for Dr. Finnegan in downtown Cincinnati.
Mrs. Bush, 93, died Thursday at Lakeside Care Center in Highland Heights.
"My mother believed there was no problem that couldn't be overcome," said her son, Ted Bush of Highland Heights. "She was an optimist. She found something to like about everybody."
She married
Theodore H. Bush, a telephone switching technician, in 1924.
Mrs. Bush had a strong sense of family and responsibility, her son said. When Mrs. Bush's mother and stepfather became ill, she cared for them in her home.
"They lived with us in the 1940s and '50s," Ted Bush said.
Mrs. Bush tackled every problem with a smile and had an ability to put people at ease with her gracious manner, according to her family. She hosted card parties and neighborhood gatherings. She could make any day a special event, her son said.
"She would come every Saturday morning with doughnuts," said her son. "It's one of my son's favorite memories."
During holidays, Mrs. Bush hosted the family dinners, enlarging the immediate family with an array of cousins of all generations.
"We used to put plywood over the pool table in the basement so we'd have a big enough table to fit everyone around," said Ted Bush. "My mother was the one who kept the family together."
