Frank Schwierjohann, hall-of-fame bowler
Frank W. Schwierjohann, an avid sportsman his entire life and one of Greater Cincinnati's top bowlers, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 88.
Mr. Schwierjohann, a native of Dayton, played all kinds of sports - golf, semi-professional football, minor league baseball in the Cincinnati Reds' farm system and bowling. He held a consistent 200-plus average on one of Greater Cincinnati's best bowling teams.
"Any sport I played when I was young, he taught me," said his daughter, Babette Norris.
Mr. Schwierjohann was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky sports halls of fame for his bowling career.
After he retired from Gibson Greeting Card Co., he and his wife Billilea, who died in 1996, were partners in Bellwood Bowling Lanes in Bellevue. Mrs. Schwierjohann, also from Dayton, managed the lanes. Mr. Schwierjohann just enjoyed them.
But Mr. Schwierjohann's greatest love was his grandchildren, Mrs. Norris said.
"He was a very kind person who lived more for his grandchildren than anything," she said. "He was the kind of grandfather who was always taking them to museums or throwing the ball with them. They did bring him the greatest joy of his life."
