Greg Thiel, massage therapist and distance runner

Howard Greg Thiel, 48, a massage therapist and widely known distance runner, died Tuesday at his home in Erlanger.

Mr. Thiel, who remained an active runner until several months ago when he developed liver cancer, was an accomplished swimmer and high school athlete when an industrial accident robbed him of his sight in 1970.

He underwent 35 operations to repair the damage from acid that splashed into his eyes, but the resulting scar tissue ultimately rejected one transplant after another. He regained his sight for three years, earned a college degree from the University of Florida, and married. Then his blindness returned. He admitted later that he briefly slipped into depression but that passed.

"He never gave up and he never wanted any sympathy," said a life-long friend, Realtor Jim Huff. "If you were around him he always had something light to say, something to cheer you up, something to say to make you feel at ease."

Friends encouraged Mr. Thiel to get his license as a massage therapist. He began as a massage therapist at the former Covington YMCA and when that was torn down, he moved to the Central YMCA in downtown Cincinnati. He had many well-known clients. He worked until a few months ago and provided massage services from a small studio in his home for those who couldn't get to the Y during its hours.

Co-workers at the Covington Y first raised the possibility of running to Mr. Thiel and it turned out to be a long-time avocation.

"I've run with Greg for over 20 years," Mr. Huff said.

"He would just hang onto my elbow while we ran. He was in a lot better shape than I was. He could run a marathon. But with me along we'd run only about two or three miles."

He was the race director for the first Governor's Cup Run in Kentucky. He received the Outstanding Kentuckian Award in 1983 in recognition of his outstanding achievements.

Despite his blindness, he continued to be active in outdoor activities such as water skiing, driving a quad runner and bicycling.

"I was at his house (Tuesday) and he taught me something about life, and about death," Mr. Huff said. "He was the same cheerful person down to the end. He was the most remarkable person I've ever known."

He was a member of Erlanger Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Crouch Thiel; a daughter, Laura Thiel, at home; a son, Drew Thiel, at home; his mother, Evelyn Barrett Thiel of Erlanger; and a half-sister, Sherry Dillon of Boston. His father, John Russell Thiel, died in 1998.

Services will be at 7:30 tonight at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Erlanger Baptist Church, 116 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
