Edward Vieth, engineer, booster
Edward Vieth was a sideline dad.
When his children played sports, he was there for support. When Roger Bacon High School needed a booster club, he helped found one. When the College of Mount St. Joseph's Dads Club needed a president, Mr. Vieth stepped forward.
"He spent his time looking after us," his son, Donald Vieth, said.
Mr. Vieth, 91, of Covington, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a retired mechanical engineer with Emery Industries. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Sorrel Vieth, died in 1997.
Mr. Vieth didn't spend all of his life on the sidelines. The Newport native who grew up in Covington played guard for the Holmes High School football team in the 1920s and was named to the all-city team in 1925. Mr. Vieth went on to play end for the University of Kentucky. But after his sophomore year his grades started slipping, and he quit the squad, his son said.
"He decided he was more interested in being an engineer than a football player," Vieth said.
Mr. Vieth was very active in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, of which he was president.
"He was just a very solid person," Vieth said.
