Melva McDonald, 'charitable man'

Melva "Mel" McDonald believed everybody deserved a fair chance, his wife said.

A federal housing administrator in Cincinnati and Minnesota until 1973, he helped start a housing program that came to be used nationwide.

"He was a very fine, very charitable man," said his wife, Dollie Field McDonald. "He always wanted everybody to have an equal chance, but he believed you had to work."

Mr. McDonald, 73, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church and active in the Men's Prayer Breakfast. He was active in the Boone County Republican Party and a Navy veteran of World War II.

After retiring as a housing administrator, Mr. McDonald worked as a federal appraiser with the Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Authority until 1994.

He also helped many charities, including the Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington where he repaired broken toys to give to children at Christmas and throughout the year.

He was a member of Mended Hearts, a group of heart patients who visit other heart patients in the hospital. Having undergone two open heart surgeries, Mr. McDonald explained the procedure to patients about to go through the operation, helping to calm their fears.

"He liked that," Mrs. McDonald said. "He thought that was worthwhile."

Other survivors include daughters, Mary Beth Field of Fort Wright, Pamela Breithaupt of Sterling, Va., Joyce Sailing of Covington, Terri Zeiter of Arlington, Texas, Ella Field and Lisa Field, both of Florence; a son, William "Bucky" Field of Lexington; a brother, Miller McDonald of LaFollette, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Mitchell Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Boone and Kenton county animal shelters. Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Nancy Air, 92, of Crescent Springs, died Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Jesse Rowland Ashcraft, 55, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a self-employed stone mason and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Ashcraft; sons, Kelly Ashcraft of Florence, Jesse D. Ashcraft and Jerry L. Ashcraft, both at home; a daughter, Missy Ashcraft of Southgate; brothers, Richard Willen of Latonia, Jerry Ashcraft and James Ashcraft, both of Covington; sisters, Virginia Bracke of Taylor Mill and Anna Roberts of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Roy Lee Bailey, 32, of Harrison County, died Sunday in Cynthiana.

Survivors include his wife, Stephanie Lacy Bailey; sons, William Keith Bailey and James Eric Bailey, both of Tacoma, Wash.; a daughter, Laura Frances Bailey of Harrison County; a stepson, Joshua David Johnson of Harrison County; his mother and stepfather, Patricia Robinson McFarland and Roger McFarland of Cynthiana; brothers, William Shane McFarland of Paris and Robert Stanley Lenz of Cynthiana.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

George Baker Jr., 49, of Highland Heights, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a heavy equipment truck driver and a state employee.

Survivors include sons, George Baker III of Indiana, Daniel Baker and Jeremy Baker, both of Wisconsin; a daughter, Genny Baker of Wisconsin; his mother, Thelma Baker of Fort Thomas; brothers, Lonnie Baker of Lakeside Park, Wendell Baker and Donnie Baker, both of Fort Thomas; and a sister, Betty Keith of Cold Spring.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

William C. Behling Jr., 77, of Wilder, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired mechanical engineer with Haliburton Service in Oklahoma.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Behling; sons, William C. Behling III of Beloit, Wis., Michael A. Behling of Louisville, Mike W. Harrington of Fairfield, Ohio and Patrick S. Harrington of Newport; daughters, Karen L. French and Judith Ann Behling, both of St. Louis, Linda M. Thornton of Moss Point, Miss., Lee Ann Lamb of Alexandria and Elaine Kay Behling of Louisville; a sister, Ruth Rosenbrock of Ammon, Idaho; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Mona Rose Hammer Fleisch, 67, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at Hospice of Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Elmer Fleisch, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Moore and Debbie Powell; sons, Steve Fleisch and Scott Fleisch; sisters, Ruth Murphy, Joan Ferguson and Carol Wagner; brothers, Daniel Hammer and James Hammer; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Assumption, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Neihard-Hensley Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Paul Joseph Heimbrock, 73, of Union, died at 2 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired employee of Delta Airlines and a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere and American Legion Post No. 4, Florence. He was a member of the Elsmere Military Honor Guard and the Union Masonic Lodge, and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Peters Heimbrock; sons, Paul D. Heimbrock of Florence and Dale A. Heimbrock of Union; daughters, Jane M. Terrell of Villa Hills and Karen F. Williamson of La Place, La.; brothers, Dr. Robert Heimbrock of Edgewood and Richard Heimbrock of Florence; sisters, Ruth Warning of Hebron, Mary Lou Marusin and Elaine Fieger, both of Villa Hills, Janice Brashear of Florence and June Farrell of Fort Mitchell; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Orville E. "Buddy" Hensley, 60, of Moriarty, N.M., formerly of Pendleton County, died Friday in New Mexico of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was a retired Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Ann Cox Hensley; daughters, Debbie Orth, Penny Gill and Tammy Myers, all of Moriarty; his mother, Effie Hensley of Cynthiana; brothers, Dallas Hensley and Jerry Hensley, both of Pendleton County, and Carl "Kenny" Hensley of Harrison County; sisters, Wilma Fogle and Beverly Dunn, both of Harrison County, Bertha Lea of Pendleton County and Bonnie Smith of Lexington; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oakwood Baptist Church, Cynthiana. Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, is handling arrangements.

Fran Simonton Martocci, 61, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Erlanger, died Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her first husband, Bob Simonton, died in 1972.

Survivors include her husband, Nick Martocci; daughters, Kathy Dawson of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Michele Amick of Kissimmee, Fla.; her parents, Robert and Mickey Schommer of Orlando; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairchild Funeral Home, Orlando. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Lloyd Alumni Association, in care of Lloyd Memorial High School, Bartlett Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling local arrangements.

Elizabeth Ann Muntis, 38, of Adrian, Mich., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Sunday at her home. She was an employee of Lenawee Health Alliance in Adrian, and was a member of St. Joseph Church in Adrian.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Muntis; daughters, Samantha Elizabeth Muntis and Emma Pauline Muntis, both at home; sons, Franklin Robert Muntis and Robert Charles Muntis, both at home; her parents, Robert and Mary Kuron of Grand Haven, Mich.; brothers, Robert W. Kuron Jr. of Louisville, Andrew J. Kuron of Mars, Pa., and Patrick G. Kuron of Spring Lake, Mich.; sisters, Mary Louise Spoerl of St. Charles, Ill., and Kathleen M. Lorenz of Grass Lake, Mich.; and grandparents, Edith B. Kuron and Patricia Greenen.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at Braun Everiss Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian, and from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Adrian. Memorials are suggested to the Muntis Educational Fund.

Gladys Netherland, 79, of Lawton, Okla., formerly of Carrollton, died Thursday in Lawton. She worked for the Shriners and the Marriott Corp. at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., and was active in the Pilgrim Holiness and Wesleyan churches in Indiana and Kansas. Her husband, Edwin L. Netherland Sr., died in 1977. A son, Gary Netherland, also died in 1977.

Survivors include sons, Lane Netherland of Lawton and Brian Netherland of New Carlisle, Ind.; a brother, Raymond Acree of Maine; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to McMahon-Tomlinson Nursing Home, 3126 NW Arlington, Lawton, Okla. 73505.

Martha Harrison Norris, 83, of Highland Heights, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired teacher with Morehead State University and a member of Painted Hills Garden Club. He was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and attended Morehead Episcopal Church. Her husband, Sterling G. Norris, died in 1973.

Survivors include daughters, Nancy Cole of Cold Spring, Kathy Daniel of Fort Thomas and Sarah Robinette of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son, Sterling F. Norris of Ashland; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bellfonte Memorial Gardens, Russell.

Albert L. "Dutch" Reibling, 88, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired assembler with Avey Machine Tool Co. in Covington and a member of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.

Mr. Reibling played baseball in the Cincinnati Reds minor league system from 1933-35, and is a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky and a member of the Kazoo Band of Northern Kentucky, which visited nursing homes to entertain the residents.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Pat Reibling; a daughter, Patricia Ehlman of Baldwin, Mo.; sons, Lt. Comm. John S. Reibling of Alexandria, Dr. Albert L. Reibling Jr. of Northville, Mich., and Michael C. Reibling of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Charles Reibling of Villa Hills; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Harold Reibling, died Sept. 2.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or in the form of Masses.

Larry R. Ritchie, 59, of Cynthiana, died Monday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was owner of Mudlick Gun Club in Harrison County, a former owner of Western Auto and an employee of Vanhook Hardware. He was a master instructor with Harrison County Hunter Safety Education and a past chairman of Quail Unlimited Chapter No. 550.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra B. Ritchie; a son, Milton Ritchie of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Rebecca Ogden of Cynthiana; his parents, Ora Milton "Bill" and Lois Kenney Ritchie of Cynthiana; two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Anita R. Rusche, 61, of Erlanger, died Sunday at her home. She was a customer service representative with Nature Co. Discovery Channel, Florence. Her husband, Robert Rusche, died in 1979.

Survivors include a sister, Eileen Stamm of Cincinnati; a brother, Al Reis of Cincinnati; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Michael J. Sanders, 21, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Rosemary "Biddy" Donoghue Sterling, 72, of Warsaw, died at 5:05 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington.

Survivors include sons, Charles J. Sterling of Sunman, Ind., and Mike K. Sterling of Crescent Springs; daughters, Mary Anne Brown of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Joan C. Freeman of Burlington; a brother, Tom Donoghue of Chula Vista, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, 1140 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Mary Sue Stull, 49, of Newport, died Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Charles Stull of Latonia; daughters, Dawn Stull, Rebecca Adams, Kathy Bridewell and Linda Neace, all of Newport; and grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Southgate United Methodist Church. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wilder. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, handled arrangements.

Virginia C. Meyer Thompson, 95, of Cincinnati, formerly of Bracken County, died Sunday at Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Concord United Methodist Church, Brooksville. Her husband, Robert C. Thompson, died in 1981.

Survivors include sons, Gordon E. Thompson, Melbourne E. Thompson and Robert L. Thompson, all of Cincinnati; a daughter, Janet L. Bergen of Cincinnati; sisters, Goldie Walter of Felicity, Ohio, and Ludie Moneyhon of Cado; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Brooksville. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.
