Robert W. O'Conner, obstetrician, Right to Life volunteer
Dr. Robert W. O'Conner of Crestview Hills delivered more than 10,000 babies during his 40-year career as an obstetrician and gynecologist, and his experiences cemented his opposition to abortion.
Dr. O'Conner, a devout Catholic who worked for the Right to Life movement, prayed and rejoiced over each child he helped usher into the world, said his wife, Margaret Schmeing O'Conner.
But Mrs. O'Conner said her husband's happiness at the birth of a child always was tinged with sorrow for the millions of babies who have been aborted and will be aborted.
"Every time a child was born it was a miracle for him," she said. "He believed each life was created by God and created to do something in particular on this earth."
Dr. O'Conner died Wednesday night at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was 71 years old.
Dr. O'Conner was a native of Covington and a graduate of Xavier High School in Cincinnati. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School and was a resident for two years at hospitals in Baltimore and San Francisco.
After a two-year stint in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. O'Conner began practicing medicine in Northern Kentucky July 1, 1959. He would retire July 1, 1999 - exactly 40 years later. He spent 36 years with the practice of Giglia, O'Conner and Gunn, which had offices in Fort Thomas and Newport.
Dr. O'Conner most recently was associated with Dr. Jeffrey Gochoel and Dr. Vince Lubrano at Women's Health Care of Northern Kentucky in Edgewood.
Despite his busy schedule, Mrs. O'Conner said, her husband made time every day to pray and urged others to do the same.
"He did not hesitate to talk about faith to his patients," she said. "It was a life-long counseling to so many young people."
Dr. O'Conner also won the respect of his peers in the medical profession.
He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Medical Society and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and was a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
