Elmer Willard, baseball expert

Elmer E. "Bud" Willard was an authority on Cincinnati Reds baseball.

"He could answer any question you had about baseball," said his daughter, Cheryl Ruge. "He was a walking encyclopedia of baseball."

"He saw Babe Ruth play," said his childhood sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Helen. "He was always talking about seeing Babe Ruth play."

Mr. Willard, 79, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

For 42 years he was a chief clerk with the C&O; Railroad, which is now CSX Railroad. A "union man to the core," his wife said, Mr. Willard was the local and district chairman for the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, a railway union. After retiring in 1981, he remained active in the railroad with the CSX Senior Citizens and the C&O; Recreation Association.

Mr. Willard, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, also was a member of Southgate VFW Post No. 3186. He trained troops during the war in the China-Burma-India theater.

Mr. Willard also was a member of the

CANDO Lodge for railroad clerks and a member of Silver Grove Baptist Church.

Other survivors include daughters, Kathy Culp of Highland Heights and Diane Ossege of Melbourne; a sister, Dorothy Bass of Silver Grove; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to National Cancer Institute for Research, Financial Management Branch, Building 31, Room 11A16, Bethesda, Md. 20892; or Silver Grove Baptist Church, Silver Grove, Ky. 41085.

L. C. Atha, 59, of Verona, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday at his home after an extended illness. He was a farmer and a member of Beaverlick Christian Church, Boone County. His parents, Ross and Jenny Moore Atha, preceded him in death.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Beaverlick Christian Church Cemetery, Walton.

Edith C. Cunningham, 96, of Hilton Head, S.C., formerly of Covington, died Nov. 25 in Hilton Head. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Carmichael of Hilton Head; a son, Daniel Jones of West Chester, Ohio; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Arlington Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Rees D. Hardy, 89, of Butler, died Tuesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. He was a farmer and mechanic and former owner of Hardy Motor Sales in Butler and Falmouth. He also was an owner of the Hardy Bros. Feed Mill in Butler and Walton, a former Butler city council member and a member of Butler Christian Church. He was an elder emeritus of the church, a member of the church board, a former chairman of the board and chairman of the church building fund. He also was a member of the Good Samaritan Camping Club and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathryn Hardy; a daughter, Cheryl Shine of Greenwood, Ind.; sons, Rees Hardy Jr. of Highland Heights and Gary Hardy of Falmouth; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Memorials are suggested to Butler Christian Church Building Fund, Butler, Ky. 41006.

Frances Jones, 88, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Charles Kendall, 76, of Bromley, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired carpenter with Carpenters Union Local No. 698, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Reed Kendall; a son, Michael Kendall of Bromley; daughters, Delores Monroe and Beverly Alfonso, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Nancy Freking of Independence; a sister, Ruth Hays of Bromley; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to Leukemia Society of America, 100 Merchant St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45246.

Rodney E. Kidd, 51, of Villa Hills, died Friday at his home. He was an information systems worker with Catholic Healthcare Partners and a former pilot.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Holyoke Kidd; a daughter, Amie Katherine Kidd of Fairfield, Ohio; a son, Jeffrey Kidd of Fairfield; a stepson, Henry Foster Jr. of Villa Hills; his parents, Anne Molloy Kidd and Rodney E. Kidd Sr. of Las Vegas; brothers, Lawrence Kidd and Robert Kidd of Las Vegas; and sisters, Judith Mackie of Las Vegas and Edith McQuestion of Allenstown, N.H.

Memorial services will be at noon Saturday at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to University of Cincinnati, Pancreatic Cancer Research, University Medical Center, P. O. Box 670544, Cincinnati, Ohio 45267. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Lahner, of Crestview Hills, died at 10:15 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William A. Lahner, died in 1986.

Survivors include sons, Thomas W. Lahner of Cincinnati and Paul J. Wahner of Alexandria; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to charity.

Clara M. Mandrell, 87, of Highland Heights, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Wayne Mandrell, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet DeMoss of Highland Heights; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland United Methodist Church, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Rembert J. Meyer, 75, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired postal worker and research and development engineer with Hunkar Laboratories, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. A son, Rembert Stephens Meyer, died in 1966.

Survivors include his wife, Sara Luise Stephens Meyer; a daughter, Karen Reach of Fairless Hills, Pa.; sons, David Meyer of Walton and Mark Meyer of Independence; a sister, Virginia Williams of Florence; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church, W. Southern and Tibbatts Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Rosemary Oldiges, 75, of Taylor Mill, died at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired bookkeeper with the former Schreiner-Wilbert Burial Vault Co., Ludlow. Her husband, John G. Oldiges, died in 1970. A son, Jerry Oldiges, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Paul Oldiges of Cincinnati, Tony Oldiges and Steve Oldiges, both of Covington; a daughter, Barbara Down of Essex, Vt.; a brother, Carl Wiesman of Cincinnati; sisters, Anna Yauss and Eleanor Woods, both of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Benedict Church, 338 East 17th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Georgia Phelps, 81, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Billy Gene Saunders, 38, of Maysville, died Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a heavy equipment operator with Maysville Dredging Co.

Survivors include his wife, Shanna Lynn Saunders of Plumville; a daughter, Shella Kegley of Plumville; a stepson, Jeffrey Moorhead of Germantown; his father, Lester Paul Saunders of Plumville; brothers, Gary Saunders of Flemingsburg, Jerry Saunders of Aberdeen, Ohio, Ross Saunders of Plumville and Bobby Joe Saunders of Maysville; and sisters, Kay Reed of Louisville, Kathy Jones of Plumville and Terry Hill of Dayton, Ohio.

Services will be at noon Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Happy Hollow Cemetery, Ribolt

Eva Zella Smith, 78, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired jeweler with Pogue's Department Store.

Survivors include daughters, Ellen Faeth of Cincinnati and Bonita Smith of Owings, Md.; sons, John Smith of Fort Thomas, Shelby Smith of Alexandria and Tim Smith of Independence; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Marie H. Wade, 86, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Grand Haven Nursing Home in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and a member of Benson United Methodist Church, Harrison County. Her first husband, Charles Hiten, died in 1970. Her second husband, Thomas Wade, died in 1985.

Survivors include nieces, Charlotte Harney and Wanda Linville, both of Paris; and a nephew, Harry Collins of Nicholasville.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031. Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, is handling arrangements.
